The Boatcrash Chronicles # 179 & 180

By meager 05-02-2012 12:47 PM
As I mentioned in my last update, April marked the 2 year anniversary of The Boatcrash Chronicles. To mark the occasion, I didn't work on the comic at all that month. Ignoring them is how we celebrate things around here.

Well, back to the ol' grindstone...

I was going to put a little parachute and tiny goggles on the cat in the second panel, but I instead opted for reality (the hallmark of this series). In reality, I'm sure Mrs Shipwreck would prevent Ship from dressing up the cats.

I originally had Boatcrash doing a bad imitation of Dorf's bad accent, but it made for an odd reading experience.

And that's all I got.

The Boatcrash Chronicles - Comic Make-E-Ups

Barely made it in time to for a March update. My other comic takes up a lot of my time. But two months in a row qualifies me for being back on the once-a-month schedule! I'm feeling the exhilarating pressure of a deadline already!

Here's what I've managed to do over the past six weeks:

Why is there no Rack-O video game? It's placing numbered cards in order! That needs to be captured in virtual form!

I keep thinking I need to redesign Wombat. I think the real Wombat has been clean shaved ever since the picture I based his facial hair on was taken. He probably took one look at his cartoon image and decided to distance himself as much as possible. So, if I update Toon Wombat, the real version would probably go blonde. Hmmm...

Is there a way to change the default spoiler text color? The red burns my eyes.

For some reason, I had a terrible time

The Boatcrash Chronicles - Big Valentiney Update

It has been a while since I posted some comics. But I do enjoy uploading large chunks all at once. Makes me feel more productive than I really am.

I had better dialog for this strip, but my... filing system (pictured, right) leaves much to be desired The "scripts" for these comics are jotted down on post-it notes as I listen to CAGcasts, or sometimes as I awaken in the early morning hours. They often go missing, or smudged under a misplaced wet cup, or somethings just plain illegible. As much as I'm sure the original version of this strip was better, I still like how Boatcrash gets his preferred method of engaging opponents from the comic book advertisments of his childhood.

I do enjoy drawing Boatcrash's middle school girls basketball team like they're the size of third graders that he towers over.

The Boatcrash Chronicles - Pulled Away From Skyrim Long Enough For This Update

I somehow managed to put 60 hours into Skyrim and create a half dozen Boatcrash comics (in addition to other comics I do) this week. Actually, I made the comics all in the past 36 hours instead of playing games. It's really one or the other. Skyrim does not bring balance to my life.

It's weird how mistakes become inspiration. When I drew the crying woman in the last strip, I realized she was way too high in frame in relation to Cheapy (I meant to draw her larger, closer to the camera). But then I realized as long as I gave her a floaty dress, she could be a ghost... and her one regret in life, the unfinished business keeping her on this mortal plane of existance, is her unrequited love of CheapyD. And he shoots her down with a big smile on his face. The rest of the comic is just filler. Especially since this comic was meant to go up last week, but I didn't finish it in time to beat Lady B's Skyrim

The Boatcrash Chronicles Updates Again!

It's only been a week since my last update, and yet I have more strips finished already? That's uncommonly productive of me. But since it is a new month, I suppose I can only technically counts this as updating once a month, which is more on par for me.

I initially had Boatcrash singing in the first panel, oddly contorting his body as he passionately belted out the song. But it made the last panel anticlimatic if the lyrics gave away the song. I could have just drawn a couple distorted musical notes that may have helped sell it better, but that would have eliminated any interpreations as to what exactly Lady Boatcrash is reacting to offscreen with her slightly terrified gaze. This is the deep thought process that goes on with constructing a cerebral comic strip like this. And now, cute zombies:

I tend to enjoy drawing these comics most when I get to draw someone in a wacky, energetic position. Perhaps it wasn't the brightest idea to base a comic about a guy that sits around a plays video games, or sits around recording a podcast. I suppose it's not nice to follow Shipwreck's twitter feed in hopes of reading about some kinect-related mishap that I can draw about, but I do it anyway. Oh well, until I banish all furniture from these strips, here's more sitting:

I am very aware of my rambling, wordy style and how it doesn't fit all too well within the confines of a little comic strip. Here is a strip that attempts to replace the words with equally confusing randomness.

The Boatcrash Chronicles Seasonal Update

I was recently reminded that I hadn't posted any comics in quite a while. It was a bit embarrassing to be called out like that, even if it was only in a passing remark.

I had a small stack of comics drawn, just sitting around, waiting to be finished. The stress of financial woes, the distraction of video games, or perhaps just rebelling against some imaginary deadline... these are likely causes of the cartooning delay.

This is normally when I would resolve to do better, and be more consistent in my updates. But I think it's best just to post what I have and quickly scurry away. After all, there are Wars to be Geared.

I should find a way to make the deer a recurring character. Maybe he can stay in Boatcrash's guest house.

These comics were scheduled to appear before the E3 saga I've already posted. You needed to know that because continuity is such a critical concern for this comic strip.

Okay, so E3 was last week. But for those of you who couldn't make it, you can now relive the highlights. Hooray for the internet!

As I was drawing these, I was thinking it seemed familiar. I finally realized that I drew some comics about E3 last year, that I've actually been drawing this comic for over a year. Over a hundred strips. Seems unreal. Sure, I'd like to forget the first thirty or so comics, but it's been a learning experience. Here's to another year.

Everytime I draw Boatcrash with angry eyebrows, it just looks wrong. The same goes for Cheapy. They just seem like they should just shrug off anything with a "gosh golly, oh well, I'm rich." As characters, they're so fundamentally good natured and head-slappingly goofy that they reject the Mr Potato Head Angry Eyes.

At least Wombat seems fit to scowl. Way to have range, Wombat!

Oh, and now some comics.

Multireview: Recent High Profile FPS, Single Player reviews

I fired a buttload of bullets over the last month, as three very different high-profile first person shooters were released. And boy, are my guns tired.

I tend to lose interest in FPS after a few hours, but these games actually held my attention for their entirety. Though their entireties are of vastly different lengths.

These games are reviewed solely on their single player campaigns, played on normal difficulty. They all have online multiplayer, but since the quality of opponents is the majority of the fun factor in those modes, it would be pointless for me to try and review that experience.

Games are rated on a 4-star system. Oh, and I managed to actually get some screenshots this time, except for Homefront because I no longer have that game in my possession.

Bulletstorm is pure machismo sprinkled with insanity, in a neatly polished package. I wouldn't say it has much of the long-lasting appeal that truly memorable

Review: Ghostbusters, Poker & Bejeweled

I play a lot of games, so I feel I should make the effort to talk about them. So here's reviews of some of the XBLA games I've recently played. I don't have any actual screenshots to post with these reviews though. I'll try to remedy that for future reviews.

About my review process:

I rate games on a 4 star scale. That's not to say 4 stars means I think it's a perfect game. Just that I enjoyed it a lot. I base my ratings on how much fun I had while playing it, and how much I was put off by how certain concepts were implemented in the game.
I also recommend who might like the game, and changes I'd like to see if the franchise continues.

My grade scale:
4 stars: Lots of fun, should be tried by most everyone.
3 stars: A solid game, though not much appeal outside core genre fans, or marred by technical problems.
2 stars: I enjoyed the concept and parts of the game, but it's filled with problems on many levels.
1 star:

Okay, these are the last of the catch-up strips from the past couple months. From here on out, I'll theoretically post single strips in a timely manner.

And there we go. I hope to now resume a normal type of schedule, posting a couple strips each week. I guess it all depends on the CAGcrew saying inspiring things.

Also, for those of you who subscribe to my blog to read the comics, a word of warning... I'm going to start posting other stuff here besides the Boatcrash Chronicles. Game related stuff, like reviews and rants... same stuff as everybody else. Just letting you know so you can adjust your subscription if you don't want non-comics showing up on your blog list.

Okay, time to play catch up. Again.

Here's some strips I drew the last couple months. I thought that maybe they'd get funnier over time, but it turns out they just get stranger. But I'll take it!

Okay, and now a "special" treat...
Here's the main culprit in the put-me-behind-schedule scheme. I started drawing this right before the end of the year. It was going to be the size of about 2 regular strips. It started growing as I drew. Then the CAGcast crew put out their favorite games of 2010 show, and so I changed some stuff in my strip. And then added stuff. And it quickly got out of hand. And since I'm never really satisfied with my work, I kept changing things often. And I got distracted working on other strips too. So finally, three months later, here it is. In another six months, I'm sure there will be a director's

Boatcrash Chronicles - Return From The Dead Edition

I drew this strip last weekend, and decided that I wanted to post it while it's still somewhat relevant. I have some other strips from the past couple months that I plan to post, but I'm having issues with them, so... Technically, this episode is out of order, and with the rigid continuity that the Boatcrash Chronicles follows, I do hope that it doesn't spoil the rest when I do post them.
Let's just say, in honor of MST3K, this is the SciFi Channel broadcast version: episode-order be damned!

Oh, and we now have to spoiler tag all pictures as not to offend, right?

I don't know what's up with Boatcrash's hair here. Next time I may have to go all the way and give him a full mullet. Would suit his fashionista personality.
