Is videogame music unnecessary?

Today Stephen Totilo wrote an article at Kotaku about his decision to listen to something other than videogame music while playing. It's a great article and as someone who always listens to a podcast or some other music while playing, I found it very interesting. Even more interesting to me though were the comments. People are outraged at the very notion of listening to something other than the background music of the game.
A few years ago my gaming changed from primarily singleplayer games to multiplayer games over Xbox live. Personally I can't stand hearing people's voice on the mic so I decided to listen to a podcast while I played...and I've been doing it ever since. It started out just during multiplayer games, then it bled in to racing games and other games without dialogue, but now I listen to podcasts while I play no matter what. I turn the game audio way down and turn subtitles on and then load up a podcast playlist on my laptop. To be clear, some... |
