Design Diary part 1

By Stuttering Billy 07-15-2009 01:07 PM
I’ve been spending the first couple of production weeks resolving the outstanding design issues.

The immediate concern was brought up by one of our staff mentor, Justin Meagher. Justin was concerned that our design document did not adequately address what became known as the ‘left behind scenario.’

The ‘left behind scenario’ was a product of a flaw in our resource based movement system.

My role in the group was to analyze the problem, develop and evaluate multiple solutions and the present my findings and suggested solution to the group at the end of the week.

The process of working through this problem revealed that the ‘left behind scenario’ was merely a symptom of a much larger issue. Over the course of pre-production our game had drifted so far from our initial core it had fundamentally changed.

Thankfully we’ve been documenting our process so I can present exactly how our game narrowly avoided becoming a single...

Brainstorming photo dump

By Stuttering Billy 06-08-2009 01:26 PM
I can't figure out how upload a photo album. So click the link for a picture dump of my teams brain storming ideas for our final game.

After weeks of brainstorming we have come up with a real time strategy where you play as for gunslingers, fighting hoards of werewolves as you escape on the last train out of town.

PS - My flash game is close to be done..I'll post a link to where to play it.

Pharoahe Monch - Desire (Ft. Showtime)

This would be my personal theme for every time I walk through a door. I would have to walk in slow-mo for the song really to work.

The Goods of 2008 part 3

By Stuttering Billy 04-02-2009 11:28 PM
I Am Legend (The book not the film)

This story is by the godfather who birthed: Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, the concept of a world wide apocalyptic plague, and The Blade and Resident evil series. This book developed the modern vampire and zombie genre. After twenty seven years of ingesting countless stories and films about vampires and zombies, this tiny short book written waaaay back in 1954 still stands up on of the top sci fi/horror novels.
The movie and its B.S. ending did this book a great disservice.

Before the Devil Knows Your Dead

I watched this movie knowing absolutely nothing about it and so should you. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman (he's kind of a really good actor). Its a Crime,...

I call upon the CAG community to help me with my game.

By Stuttering Billy 03-29-2009 04:26 PM

As we speak, I'm working on my detailed design doc for a game called -Hunt or be Hunted. My problem good people, is that I have a crappy "X-statement" and I need ideas for a new one.

An X statement is pretty much a game hook or tagline. My instructor was a 15 year vet at EA. EA coined the term "X-statement" so that is why we use it in school.

Ok so here is the game's High Concept -

Play as either an escaped convict or the bounty hunter sent to catch him. As the convict, use speed and camouflage to outsmart your opponent as you search for an escape route. Bounty Hunters have night vision and superior tracking senses to find their target. Each must outsmart their opponent all the while enduring the harsh terrain of Alaska.

Think of the game as "Cat n Mouse" with the mouse being agile...

Back to the grind stone, so little time to blog

By Stuttering Billy 03-25-2009 04:33 PM

So little time to post. Sorry my faithful five (You know who you are) followers for not updating. I'm half way through term 3 and shit be ramping up yo! Today (Sunday) has been the first sunny day this year, so I put down the keyboard for once and spent a nice day in the sun. Looks like the god of pulling all-nighters will be calling my name again sometime this week.
Contrary to my low self esteem, it looks like I'm actually doing good work in school. My Unreal 3 single player level was picked by the teacher to show off as one of the top levels in our class! Later this week I'll upload the file if anyone with UT3 wants to try it out (I'm adding physics to the map this week).

While I still can't grasp that I'm taking a course about making games, I now

It Begins....again

By Stuttering Billy 03-24-2009 03:05 PM

Five days off and now, I'm back to the grind. Past students have warned me multiple times about the dreaded term 3 class schedule. I pulled two all-nighters in term 2, so I guess I should invest in a sleeping bag for term 3. The last two terms, consisted of a lot of theory, so it will be nice to start putting the game design abilities I have learned into action in term 3.

Since graduating highschool, I always felt that time had slowly crept by. Now, it seems that's only true when you work jobs you dont enjoy. School is super stressful, but time has flown by. I'm almost halfway through my one year course. Feels like a blink of an eye. Soon I'll be driving a mini-van full of kids to school and paying a mortgage on a 3 bedroom house (ha).

Stutter + Game Design = WORK

By Stuttering Billy 02-10-2009 02:00 AM
Gah!
I have more then enough homework in school, let alone trying to juggle my daily speech maintenance. Dumb ass me decided it would be a good idea to record my game pitches to make things "easier" in school.

Oh what a mistake! Why can't I just hide behind my stutter and get a pity grade from my teachers? So with recording all my game doc pitches I have just doubled my nightly work. See unlike you normies, for every min of speech, twenty five seconds of that is filled with stutter-filled awkwardness. So now, a fifteen minute speech turns into a TWO HOUR recording, with another hour getting the beats down to match my powerpoint. The best part is that it all that was lost last night when audacity decided I should do four hours of work instead, thus, deciding to corrupt my first recording. I'm in an industry all about technology and oh boy do I HATE technology...

Fallout 3

Fallout and Fallout 2 consumed my middle school and high school days respectfully. I can't give a fair and balanced review, because of my blinding love for the series. If you dug Mad Maxx, Oblivion or any story about "wandering", give Fallout 3 a try.

Call of Duty 4 (Online Multiplayer)

Yeah, yeah the game came out in 07 but this is the only game I have played consistently throughout 2008 and now into 09.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

Zombies, zombies and more zombies. As the title says: WWZ is a oral history of the zombie war. Your telling me you don't remember the great zombie war? Well then you better read this
