Wombat's Burrow: UGO buys 1up
By Wombat 01-08-2009 11:07 AM

I feel like I need to weigh in on this. It’s been a tough few days and I have waiting for the dust to settle a bit. To be honest I don’t think it has yet and the inter-sphere still seems quite angry over what has happened. And I completely understand, too many great and talented people lost their jobs. Not just random employees of a faceless company but friends. Some people I know personally other I feel like I know from their shows and articles. There is nothing I can to do to defend that action, it just plain sucks. What I can do is urge people to not hate the messenger. It is no secret that Ziff Davis was not a profit machine. The company had filed for chapter eleven and was begging companies to take over their properties. UGO turned out to be one of those companies, and they did what they felt they had to. Does that make it right? It depends on who you ask. Does it suck? It sure does. But does that make UGO a deserved target of the hatred?... |

Wombat's Movie Pick of the Month: Silverado
By Wombat 11-13-2008 12:32 PM
I mentioned it at the end of the CAGcast this week, but I wanted to write short blog post about one of my favorite movies, Silverado. For those not familiar with the film, it is Western, written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. Released originally in 1985, the film marks the end of a revisionist period for Kasdan as a writer. Prior to this he had written: The Empire Strikes Back Body Heat (also directed) Raiders of the Lost Ark Return of the Jedi The Big Chill (also directed) The Star Wars films very much pay homage to the sci-fi serials of the 30’s-40’s that came before it, as Raiders does for the action serials of the same era. Body Heat is a tribute to the Noir films of the 40’s and 50’s. Silverado is also very self aware of its roots. The four main heroes are all archetypes from Westerns. It is the film's self awarness that’s makes it unique. It is not gritty like Unforgiven but it is still a “serious”... |

Wombat Makes UGO Blog Readers Mad
By Wombat 11-06-2008 05:30 PM
So I posted this yesterday:
http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/g...stuck_in_2002/ And unlike most of my posts that seem to die after a day, people are still commenting on it. Why? because no one agrees with me. I know thats nothing new, but I was hoping for some CAG opinions on this as well. Short version for those who won't give me the page view: I basically say that this generation of console is geared towards the HDTV owner and that SDTV owners shouldn't complain so much. |

My Star Wars Collection
By Wombat 09-06-2008 01:57 PM
Long Ago in a small Apartment far, far away, slightly before I became more videogame oriented, I collected Star Wars figures, more specifically the Power of the Force figures released from 1995-2000. They have been in storage for a while but know that I live in a house I thought it was time to bring them home. Check 'em out. |

Wombat Reviews Sumo Lounge Chairs
By Wombat 08-28-2008 12:05 PM
You know I really enjoy, being comfy while gaming. Well luckily for me the really, really nice folks over at SumoLounge ( www.sumolounge.com ) were kind enough to send me not one, but two of their current model Sumo chairs, the Omni (http://www.sumolounge.com/omni.shtml) and the Sumo Gamer (http://www.sumolounge.com/sumosac4ft.php).
Both Chairs are super comfortable, yet the each has different pluses. The Omni is an ergonomic marvel. Unlike a standard “beanbag chair”, it is filled with what I assume is a plastic bead like substance. When you sit on the chair firms up and molds to your body. I would recommend this chair for the more serious, solo gamer. It’s a great chair for long online Halo 3 or COD4 games. It provides a rigid, yet comfortable experience. Think of it as the seat of a high end sports car but in beanbag form. The Sumo series is a different animal. It is like a cross between a giant Teddy Bear... |

Wombat's Watchmen Issues
By Wombat 08-05-2008 12:24 PM
I was asked this in an Instant Message, two emails and a PM, so I figured it warranted a blog post.
What’s my deal with The Watchmen? Its not that I don’t like the book, I do. I just don’t love it; I think its “ok”. Here is why. Originally Alan Moore planned on using the Charlton and Fawcett characters that DC had recently acquired. DC had other plans for the characters and Moore was forced to create all new characters that were loosely based of the Charlton stars, Blue Beetle, The Question and Capt. Atom. Here is where things get a bit lost. I don’t like Moore’s Original characters and I feel he missed an opportunity make his point better. One of the themes in the book (mind I haven’t read it in about 10 years so I may be hazy on details) is about trust and how in Comic Books we always trust the superheroes. We were supposed to blindly believe that in this book that the people trusted these “superheroes”. Here is my problem; the... |

Wombat's A Daddy! |
CheapyD note: This is the best news to come out of E3. Congratulations to the Wombat family!
I just got home for the first time since 2:00AM, and only to walk the dog and grab a "real" pillow. Why? Because Mrs. Wombat successfully gave birth to Baby Wombat today at 1PM. Sabrina Eden is a healthy 6 lbs 8 oz with ten toes and fingers. Pictures to come when I am not completely overwhelmed and have had at least 4 hours sleep. So now July 15 is both Mrs. and Baby Wombat's birthday. |

Lunch with Wombat Part 3
By Wombat 07-10-2008 12:50 PM
Here another lunch option that I find dangerous, yet delicious, well at least today it is...
The Group Order Its great because I dont have to decide where to get lunch from and it also re-affirms that my co-workers don't hate me. If they did, why would they ask me to lunch? It is bad because if they want to go someplace that has something greasey and awesome, it is hard not to get it. Today it was thai food, I love thai food. I had chicken pad thai and shrimp dumplings for 6 bucks, viva la lunch special. Not a great for you lunch, but awful either, I think. |
