Since last night's Raw, i couldn't get CM Punk's promo out of my head, so I need to blog about him, and maybe, it'll clear my mind of everything.

I'm a huge fan of CM Punk, and I have been since the middle of his time in ROH. I downloaded the Best of CM Punk vol. 1 because I'd heard alot about him, and saw him alot on CAW lists for the Smackdown vs Raw series. Most of the DVD dealt with his feud with Raven. The matches were great, no complaints, with a few promos thrown in there, which were awesome. They were different from what I was seeing on WWE, and I liked it. I continued watching, and then Punk cut this promo on Raven after a grueling cage match (If I remember correctly.) I had never seen anyone cut a promo with such raw energy and made it seem believable with the excpetion of Eddie Guerrero's WCW promos when he was forming the LWO. Almost as if behind the scenes, he did truly have a problem with Raven and his lifestyle. After that promo, I became a huge fan of Punk, and followed everything he did. The rest of the video was awesome, but that promo really stuck.

When I found out Punk was headed to WWE, I was excited. I just knew he'd rip the place up with great matches and awesome promos. He started off in OVW, did some great work down there, but it seemed like it was taking forever for him to get to TV. Then one week, there he was, in a backstage promo, telling everyone who he was and all that stuff. It took almost a month for him to have his first match, which to me, seemed like an eternity. His style had changed. He had more Muay Thai moves in his arsenal, and his finisher was the Anaconda Vice. I was always a fan of submission moves, so for Punk to have one as his finish was awesome. It sucked he couldn't use the Pepsi Plunge (Top rope pedigree) But, I knew there was no way he'd be allowed to use it.

Fast forward to 2008 and Wrestlemania 24. Punk was in his second Money in the Bank match. The year before, he had come so close to winning it, but got smashed off the top of the ladder by Ken Kennedy, who eventually won. This year, I went into it expecting the same result, just with Chris Jericho being the one to win. I was wrong, and couldn't be more happy that I was wrong. CM Punk won that match, and I literally (yes, literally) jumped out of my chair in surprise. It'd been a long time since wrestling had been able to make me feel like a kid again. A kid who didn't know that the whole thing was pre-determined. This is the MitB that Jeff Hardy was scheduled to win, but his violation of the Wellness Policy knocked him out of the match, and out of WWE for 60 days.

Moving along to that year's draft, when I saw that Punk had moved from ECW to RAW, I was elated. I figured he would be getting more TV exposure. The week after the draft, Edge was out, cutting a promo, and Batista came out and laid him out, because in their title match, Edge cheated to win. I expected the normal beatdown, but, Punk's music hit, and once again, the kid in me came out. As much as I want to be an optimist, I am a huge pessimist, so I was thinking "Fuck, Punk is going to be the first MitB winner to cash in and lose." Even with Edge laid out, I was fearful that Punk would not win. Once again, I was wrong, and happy to be wrong. Punk was World Heavyweight Champion!!!! I only had one problem. Punk was face, and I always thought he worked much better as a heel. Punk defended his belt a few times, each defense looking weaker than the last, unfortunatlely, until at Unforgiven in September 2008, Punk was jumped by a then heel Orton and his stable Legacy, and was kicked in the head, taking him out of his upcoming Championship Scramble title defense and forcing him to forfeit the title. To this day, I can't be a fan of Orton because of it.

Time passed, and Punk floated in the mid card, picking up a Tag title with someone else I'm a fan of, Kofi Kingston, and nabbed an Intercontinental championship, making him the 19th Triple Crown winner, and making him the man who achieved Triple Crown status the fastest. Moving on to Wrestlemania 25, and the Money in the Bank match. Punk was in it for a third time. Something about the match made me feel Punk had the best shot of winning, even though it was his third time in it, and if he won, would be the second time winning. Punk pulled out the win and yes, I marked out like crazy. There was still a problem though. PUNK WAS STILL FACE!!!!

Now, on to that year's draft. Punk was moved from Raw to Smackdown. A move I hated, because I never watched Smackdown. I would only read the spoilers the day after it was taped, but at least it was a change of scenery, so to speak. He had a small feud with Umaga, which I despised, but as long as Punk kept MitB status, I was alright. On to June, and the Extreme Rules PPV. Punk had a Samoan Strap match (Yuck) with Umaga, which he won, and Jeff Hardy had a title match against Edge in an awesome ladder match. Hardy won, that grueling match, and got his first ever World title win. The match was over, Punk's music hit, and out he came with the briefcase to cash in. This time, I was much more excited. Why? For the first time, He was showing heelish tendencies and facial expressions (with the exception of that shitty heel turn in ECW.) The result of this cash in was an amazing feud with Jeff hardy, and a slow, perfect heel turn by CM Punk. Quite possibly the best heel turn I've ever seen. The feud was full of amazing promos on both sides, and it was somewhat of a call back to Punk's ROH days when he was feuding with Raven. When the feud was over, Punk vanquished the 'evil' that was Jeff Hardy.

After that feud, I stopped watching wrestling for a while. I got tired of the product, since the only good thing about it was Punk. I, of course, kept tabs on what he was doing through the internet, and youtube, that would upload the goings on.

Now, skip to mid to late 2010. I read that Punk was injured, and I knew 100% that there was no chance I'd go back to watching wrestling any time soon. Wrong. Punk would be doing commentary. I knew how great he was at it when he was in ROH, so I knew I had to tune in just for his commentary if nothing else. At the end of 2010/beginning of 2011, CM Punk took out one of the main reasons I stopped watching WWE in the first place. John Cena. I thought a feud with Cena would Punk right back in the main event spotlight, and in the title hunt. Wrong once more. The feud with Cena went nowhere, and he moved on to Orton, who, as stated before, took him out of the Championship scramble match back in 2008. Punk, and the group he was leading at the time, the New Nexus all got buried pretty badly, which frustrated the hell out of me. In my opinion, Punk was way better than Orton. There's no way he should've gotten buried so badly in this feud. After the orton feud, Punk continued to float around in the lower main event/upper mid card for a little bit.

And this all leads me to last night (June 27th.) CM Punk cut a promo so scathing, and so energetic (Although he was pretty calm for most of it) that it made me think of the promo he cut that turned me into a fan. The promo mentioned things I read about behind the scenes like Paul Heyman being a big backer of him and how he was vilified from day one, and also mentioned things I always felt were true about him like he he was the best in the company in ring, in mic work, and on commentary and wondering why the hell he wasn't promoted more. Now, while people argue if the promo was a a work or a shoot, I don't care either way. June 27th's promo will stay with me forever, just like the promo he cut on Raven.
