I didn’t know exactly where I was but knew that I had to get out of the open. As I rushed across the road into the tree line I spotted a village to my right. Sneaking through the shadows I became aware of how much noise I was making… enough to be heard easily. I crouched and shuffled along until I reached the tree edge and was disappointed by the open field that lay between me and the village. ”Not a very safe place to cross in broad daylight,” I admitted. So I worked my way around while maintaining cover until I caught a glimpse of a farm house with three large barns over the next ridge. I smiled and thought, “That’s where I will find a weapon.”

But then the risk set in. That would be a good spot for any survivor who is looking for a weapon. Plus, I currently have no way to protect myself. The new reality is that there is no telling what another survivor will do out here. With so many bandits running around and murdering others to prey on their few possessions it’s best to avoid any confrontations. Regardless, I’m getting thirsty, hungry, and don’t know if I will have a better chance even if I continue on to try and find a safer spot to score some goods. I don’t like it… but I have to go for it.

I scout out the spot for a few minutes noticing the half dozen zombies lurking around and the lack of any signs that someone else is near. I wait for the moment when a path clears and make my way down the hillside on my stomach. Without too much fuss I am into the first barn and am rewarded for my bravery with a bright red hatchet. I shuffle over and collect it and proceed towards the next barn when just outside the door a zombie’s silhouette stumbles into my view and startles me. But the situation is quite different from 5 minutes ago. While I was just some scared survivor looking for food and water, now I have some leverage, literally. I bury the hatchet in his head and he drops, but another zombie is also on the trail.

I make my way quickly into the next barn and understand that this situation is quickly getting out of control. There isn’t just one, but now three zombies that are aware of my presence. I close the doors to the far end of the barn to keep them out and as I work my way back to the entrance another zombie appears. Instead of wasting time with an attack, I retreat to make my way out through the far doors where I noticed numerous obstacles to slow the zombie pursuit. Running now to make my escape, and with the doors just a few steps away it happens… I hear a loud gunshot and everything goes black.

All for a hatchet.

I've been wanting to play Ken Levine's System Shock 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Shock_2)...

I've been wanting to play Ken Levine's System Shock 2 (1999) ever since I got my hands on Bioshock. I recently decided to make it happen. I bought Windows 7 ($150), installed with bootcamp onto my Macbook, and purchased System Shock 2 CD from Amazon used ($44). It arrived today and I am installing it along with some MODs to update the game:

1. Copied SHOCK folder to C:
2. Install SS2Tools (requires 7-zip)
3. Install SS2Mods
4. Loaded in SHTUP and SHMUP.

Cross your fingers that it all works.

UPDATE: Yeeeaaahhh!
