Hellboy tosses the baby into the air, winds up his grenade launcher, and the baby never comes down....

Hellboy tosses the baby into the air, winds up his grenade launcher, and the baby never comes down. The movie has completely frozen.

Was the disc broken? Was my PS3 dying?

Nope. The latest firmware has trouble with a specific audio codecs on the 60gig fat PS3's.

After a bit of searching I found I was not alone and that a few other old PS3 owners were encountering symptoms very similar to my own. Hellboy 2 had been previously unwatched, but a friend verified it worked on his player. Another movie, Wanted, had played many times without problems on previous firmware revisions. After several lens cleaning attempts later, both Wanted and Hellboy 2 still had skipping trouble in the same places.

In the same chapter section of both movies.

Both Universal movies with the same menu system.

Both with DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound displayed prominently on the box.

With additional googling, it looks like this problem does not seem wide spread or well diagnosed. I also plan to use some of my Netflix queue to test a few more movies (and duplicate the tests of Wanted and Hellboy 2). And, hopefully, this is a known issue and is fixed in the next firmware release.

So, here we were watching some movie trailers over lunch when we stumbled across the new Narnia 3 trailer. After having read and been disappointed with the books as a kid, the movies haven't really caught my attention. The trailer music did however, because I had heard it before...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrJQDPpIK6I

Part way through at about 1:22, I recognize the music. It happens in the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer at about 1:37 in:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5DL6...eature=channel

After playing them back to back, my coworkers did not believe they were exactly the same song. Thanks, Spike D. Punch. Your blog post helped figure this one out. They are probably both the same song from Two Steps from Hell.

Originally from my own blog, here. Wish I could import these over automatically or something.

Flag Collecting. FFFUUUUUU-

I liked Assassin’s Creed. I posted my impressions upon beating it. I do note, however, I left out...

I liked Assassin’s Creed. I posted my impressions upon beating it. I do note, however, I left out a very large point in that article. I hated the flag collecting.

There are 100 flags in each city. Completely optional to gameplay, completely required to get some Gamerscore. I had the guide. I used the checklist. I waited until near the end of the game to go around and collect them all so I’d be familiar with controls and have all the powers necessary to get them.

And I failed.

In each city, in my gamesave, there are 1 or 2 flags per city that I never achieved. I was using a walkthrough and I could not find them. I was angry, and vowed to never bother with these stupid fetch quests again. I’m looking at you Naruto and Far Cry 2.

Assassin’s Creed 1 broke me of collection quests.

But, alas, I’m currently stuck collecting people in Prototype. Each person found unlocked a 30 second video telling backstory or a sidestory. It was not vital to the plot and I was determined not to bother. That is, until characters started mentioning people I did not know and events I did not understand. Apparently, the fetch quest is not optional if you want to understand the plot. So now I’m stuck following another map and guide, collecting these memories.

Prince of Persia added it as a mechanic, requiring the player to transverse and find 400+ Light Seeds in order to unlock powers necessary to travel to the end of the game. And I’ll *have* to resume in AC2, too.

http://www.screwattack.com/HardNews/040909

Now they have impact on gameplay? I have to do it to make my dude better? When did collecting every single damn coin in Mario become a fun activity?

Fuck flags. Fuck coins. Fuck collecting fucking journals, fucking briefcases, and fucking secret documents. I don’t like picking up after my roommates in real life; why would I want to pick up after some lazy agents who have scattered a *thousand* gems across an entire damn city.

I should note, I don’t mind the occasional scavenge. Finding a few powerful rewards/artifacts can be fun. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 requires you to find 15 items in order to unlock 3 characters (5 each). Shadow Complex and Metroid require the player to acquire new equipment during the exploration of their complex.

But if there are hundreds of required items in a glowing path in front of you; that’s just tedious.

I already have a Wordpress.com blog I've been updating since long before CAG added their great support.

Wouldn't it be great if we could import from our other blogs as entries? Perhaps similar to Facebook's Notes import from the RSS feed.

You'd see a lot more posts coming from me if we could.

Lode Runner was 800; now 1200?

Early Wed morning, Lode Runner was released to the marketplace for 800 points.

Early Wed morning, Lode Runner was released to the marketplace for 800 points.
All of the advertising and announcements pointed to another 1200 point release, including the page on xbox.com. But the marketplace had it for 800.
I decided to purchase through the marketplace on xbox.com and add to my queue. Account charged 800 points.

**Price was determined a mistake, and raised to 1200 midday.**

Went home, downloaded Lode Runner and checked account balance. Indeed, I own Lode Runner for 800.

So, what is with all the 1200 point games? A sign of the raise in MS's stake in the profits? If you aren't Castle Crashers or Braid, your game is going to have a hard time pulling the $15 price point. N+ was 800. Even Bionic Commando was 800 (through user poll, but they still did it).

That's the main thing stopping me from the Penny Arcade game. It's $20 on XBLA, $15 everywhere else (and I thought Xbox had to match PSN). I missed the 800 sale for Ep1, and I did intend to get it, but I would have still been hesitant to continue at $15.

When you can find retail games for $20 (Mirror's Edge, Tomb Raider Underworld, Oblivion, countless others), and the PSN has classics like Suikoden for $6 playable on either PS3 or PSP, what makes the $15-$20 price point seem like a good idea?

With Steam sales, we can get digital distrobution games for $5. 20% off a coop pack is just weak in comparison.

Anyway, Lode Runner first impressions: very good, but can't quite take on the other 1200pt heavy hitters.
