I have been trying to find a way to get rid of my religious programming. I was raised a Christian for the vast majority of my life and have JUST recently started to realize there are errors and contradictions in that faith that I just don't want to go into here. Whenever I have tried to actually go back into that faith, I start to feel an incredible sense of dread because, according to Christianity, Chinese people, Middle-Eastern people, African people, and any other people who are not dominated by Christian culture...well, the majority of them will go to hell when they die, and have no clue why. Connecting this idealism to reality is one of the scariest trippiest things you can do to yourself mentally I believe. Christians say Atheists are cynical but this...this is just fascism.

Anyway, I'd like to erase the entire idea of Christianity being true from my head so that I can get on with my life and know exactly what to believe instead of we all deserve to go to hell unless we believe in Jesus. I need mental peace of mind. I have actually been in contact with a Christian guy who I debate with on occasion about whether Christianity is the "truth" or not. Any suggestions?

Types of movies that, in my opinion, need to die

I'm sorry, I just need to get this off my chest. I have been steadily losing interest in the movie industry for quite a while now, and these types of movies are a lot of the reason why. These are movies that just keep showing up again and again every single year and it's getting old. Oh, and before you ask, yes I love to make lists of things I hate/love, fuck off.

CAUTION: This is a long, stupid rant

Something vs. Something movies
Fuck movies that have this type of title. Alien vs. Predator, Freddy Vs. Jason, Ecks Vs. Sever. I'm sure Monsters vs. Aliens was an entertaining movie, but I most likely haven't seen it because I subconsciously avoid films that have this type of title. If you wanna make a movie about two battling opponents, name it "Something Wars" or "Battle of Whatever" or "Spiderman 2" Then I won't hate it so much. It's not just the words, it's the concept. Something vs. Something kind of movies have a stench that smells of fan service cash-in. Gtfo.

Live-Action movies about talking animals
G-Force
Cats Vs. Dogs (EXTRA RAGE!!!)
Marmaduke
Garfield
Alvin and the Chipmunks
That one chihuahua movie

ARE YOU AS PISSED OFF AS I AM YET?!?!

CGI-Heavy Apocalypse Movies
Even Spielberg can't do this right. These flicks are nearly always soulless special effects showcases that basically give me what I'm expecting from the movie so early on that I'm not even interested in the rest of the film by the time I'm half-way through. The worst part is they never even get the main characters to be likeable enough because they're too busy focusing on the super realistic (not really) destruction going on around them to pay attention to why we should care at all. What happens with a movie where everyone but the main characters dies, and the main characters are boring? Who knows, I fell asleep. And by the way movies that are set AFTER the apocalypse are much better. You get the concept right from the get-go, and all there is left is the characters and the way they deal with it. Perfect storytelling material.

Horror movies that are bloody and not scary
I can always see these movies coming from a mile away. They usually have a commercial running every 15 minutes on TV, have a number at the end, and several young teenage leads. Going to see one of these films in a theater is like watching a surgeon perform the weirdest, sickest surgery you've ever seen, while the patient is awake. It's gross, violent, loud, and excruciating, but it's still just standard procedure. And it costs an arm and a leg. I'm funny.

Fantasy movies that try too hard be like other more successful fantasy movies
Percy Jackson and the...yadda yadda
The Last Airbender
Twilight
The Golden Compass
etc. etc. just stop trying to be like lord of the rings and harry potter, YOU ALL LOSE!!! Even you, Chronicles of Narnia

Remakes
I swear if I see another fucking Wes Craven horror remake I'm going to rage my eyeballs out. The worst part is, he's credited as a producer for many of them. It's like he's encouraging people to steal his ideas because he's too lazy to come up with any new ones, and so is everybody else. Because of that, his good OLD ideas are still fresher than anything made nowadays, so he wins. I mean, the guy's gotta make a living somehow, right? Also, Japanese horror remakes. I don't say this often about anything, but they should stay in Japan...because American producers will just screw them up.

I decided to follow up my ultra negative reaction to Microsoft's Kinect with a positive one for the 3DS. I'm not gonna pretend to be a fan of Nintendo, I used to be but when the Wii came out and they started releasing all of these cooking and exercising and sports simulators I just lost all hope in the company. 3DS has revitalized my spirit, so here's a countdown of reasons why I already love it:

6. Analog stick. Because analog sticks make everything better. They can even reverse the damage done by motion controls. Analog sticks...are miracles.

5. Higher resolution. Now the screens will look less pixelly and small objects in the distance will be much easier to spot, opening up possibilities for bigger games and finer details.

4. It's backwards compatible. I don't have a DS anymore, so when I buy this I can play all of the games I missed while I didn't have one. Pokemon here I come!

3. PSP graphics (supposedly) without the annoyingly flimsy UMD discs and load times.

2. Game lineup. Holy mother of God. Remember the DS's launch titles? Super Mario 64 was the only thing of note. Everything else was rushed garbage. Feel the magic? You're kidding, right? Let's take a look at some of the titles announced for the system so far, shall we?

Kid Icarus, Saints Row, Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater, Super Street Fighter IV and tons more. It sure beats the hell out of any handheld lineup I've ever seen, and it's just getting started.

1. You can turn the 3D off :)

A couple of reasons why I hate kinect

The kinect pisses me off. I wish they hadn't spent all of this money marketing and designing this...

The kinect pisses me off. I wish they hadn't spent all of this money marketing and designing this monstrosity. I also wish they hadn't spent their entire E3 this year trying to sell it and not focusing on the actual games that people buy Xbox 360's for. So here's a couple of reasons why Kinect is a terrible idea and I won't be buying one.

3. Price. 150 dollars. Why is this a problem? Well, explain to me how Microsoft thought they would have success with a peripheral that costs almost as much as the console does. When has such a peripheral ever had success in the video game industry? That's right, never. I don't believe Microsoft will have the success they desire with this machine. Not even close. And I certainly won't be buying one myself, but imagine a confused mother wondering why she has to buy two machines instead of just one to get an experience similar to the $199 Wii.

2. Games. Where are they? Where's the game that's supposed to sell me this product? All I've seen are mini-games, and most of those are exercise and dancing games, both of which are genres that I don't give a shit about. Where's the fully functioning action adventure title? Or a fully functioning shooter? Or a fully functioning racer? Where's project gotham racing or forza working on this thing? Oh, right, when those come out they'll just have a "kinect option" in addition to the already far superior and less-of-a-hassle 360 controller options that the games are made for primarily. What a joke.

1. HOW DO YOU TURN! Answer me, Microsoft, if I don't have anything in my hands to make my character face a different direction than forward, TOWARD my TV, how in the holy hell is this kinect system going to have ANY variety at ALL in gameplay! Every game that comes out for this thing will be you, facing forward, doing something to react to something in the background.Oh, I know how we can fix that, WITH ANOTHER PERIPHERAL! We can make more money just so that people can do things that could be done with a controller decades ago. FUTURE OF GAMING MY ASS!

Nice move! Now do it again in the opposite direction for 1,000,000 points!

I wonder how bad you have to be at this game in order to miss!

At least for me. When I have too many games to play, it makes me feel overwhelmed and I just don't like it. I like to have only one game to play at a time, and I think hanging around on this website all the time is sort of destroying my normal gaming routine. Games don't go cheap until they're old, and I usually prefer playing newer games because it's more satisfying, I feel like I'm "in the now" rather than the past. Sure, sometimes I like to play a throwback match of super smash or boot up pokemon blue or red for nostalgia's sake, but enough is enough and I'm not gonna keep all of these unplayed games laying around.

For me, it's better to just cut your losses and start from scratch. I'm never going to finish all of the codemasters racing titles that I bought off Steam. I'm probably never going to finish all of the Grand Theft Auto titles either. I probably won't go back and play Deus Ex or KOTOR even though I missed those supposedly "classic" titles when they were first released. I just don't have the time. Even one video game can sometimes be too much for me to handle if it's too long, since I have so much school and work, and argh...this blog is a waste of time, let me just get to the point...

Good sequels vs. Bad sequels

How much are you willing to pay for most of today's sequels? Let me start off with some cheap ass...

How much are you willing to pay for most of today's sequels? Let me start off with some cheap ass logic. You begin by purchasing a brand new game for $59.99. You take it home and you shove it in your Nintendo, and your relationship with the game has begun. Dozens and dozens of hours later, you eventually get bored. Hey, it happens, no game is perfect and everything gets old. However, you loved it so much that you vow that whenever there is a sequel to that game, you will do a day one purchase and buy the super limited ultimate cake edition with sprinkles and a doll helmet plus a crummy action figure. OH BOY! A year later, the sequel comes out. Whoa, that was quick. You shell out your 120 + tax and take it home to start a brand new relationship. You eat the cake and the sprinkles, wear the helmet as a hat for about 30 seconds, then shelve the action figure on some desk to post pictures of on your gaming blog later and there goes the full value of the cake edition. The campaign is now half as long, there are only 8 new maps, and the co-op mode is just a "kill endless waves of enemies for achievements" mode. RAGE! The core game is still enjoyable, but whatever happened to a sequel improving upon the original? The gameplay is still the same, what's new here? You log 40 hours into the game total, and then call it quits. Will you buy the next game? Well of course, you just love the core gameplay so much. But next time, you’re going to wait until it hits $29.99, then you’ll buy. Because you only got half the value out of the second game. Now that’s thinking like a cheap ass.

Even if you are a cheap ass, you still can’t deny the fact that gaming is an expensive hobby. You’ve got limited money, limited time, and limited patience for each individual game. As a gamer, you crave new and unique experiences, so you have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to buying new games, especially when it comes to sequels to games you’ve played before. One specific genre comes to mind whenever I think about sequels that diminish in value, and that happens to be shooters. Shooters are a repetitive bunch. You shoot terrorists and you shoot aliens and you shoot some more terrorists and you shoot yet more aliens. Sometimes buildings fall down in the background while you’re shooting, or you’re in a falling elevator while you’re shooting, or you’re on a rickety bridge that’s breaking while you’re shooting. Variety? Toss in a turret sequence or a couple of stealth missions and you’re golden. The only reason it doesn’t get old a whole lot sooner is because of the competitive side to it. People love to frag each other online, myself included, and when the core gameplay is good, it leads to hours upon hours of fun. It’s a great value.

"What do you mean I can't trade this stuff in?! I'm done with it!"

I expect a lot out of sequels though. Sequels need to heighten the stakes somehow and make things more exciting. Give me more stuff to do, dammit. Give me a campaign co-op mode if the first game didn’t have one. Give me higher player counts, give me prettier visuals, give me a longer more varied story mode and definitely give me a nice solid storyline instead of the same old “go kill this communist and/or fascist jerk ‘cuz he kills people, and don’t forget to kill lots of people on the way lol.” I couldn’t give less of a damn about new maps and new guns. To me that stuff is DLC on a disc, plain and simple. It’s not my fault that it is now an industry standard to release new maps and weapons shortly after each game is released.

On the other side of town, there are RPG’s and other story-focused games that are mainly about the single-player experience. These are games who can justify sequels more easily, because if there’s one highly elusive, super-rare beast out there, it’s a videogame with a good storyline, and I’ll pay top dollar for that hide. With shooters, the focus is more on set-pieces and shooting galleries than on story, and most of the time I skip the cut-scenes because I don’t care about a bunch of soldiers shouting f-bombs and talking about how tough they are because they know how to use guns and drive tanks and get the ladies and sprint. Chicks love it when burly dudes sprint. I honestly appreciate it when game developers go out of their way to actually make me like the characters I’m playing as. Sometimes that’s the only way I can tell the difference between game developers who actually care about the story and those who are just trying to make a quick buck.

First game or second game? Who the hell knows.

If I had to lay down some examples of good sequels and bad sequels, some of them might be a bit controversial. If you weren’t able to tell by now, this whole essay has been one gigantic fist hurled at Modern Warfare 2’s face, but it doesn’t stop there. I believe ODST was a terrible sequel that shouldn’t have been sold at full price, and virtually every Guitar Hero game since 2 has been guilty of cashing in. I do have some examples of sequels that I believe were quite good. Mass Effect 2 was a good sequel for its excellent ability to expand on the universe introduced in the first game and Assassin’s Creed 2 was also great for its improved story and characters as well as variety in missions. Also, Call of Duty 4 finally ditched World War 2 and “invented” the online ranking system while Halo 3 added TONS of online features. All it takes for them to make a good sequel is to show that they care.

I don’t hate sequels, I just hate bad ones. The moment I put down 60 for a sequel, I expect to get at least something tangibly new that I can safely say made the purchase worth it, or they’ll get a fistful of internet hate on a gaming blog. Even if every sequel has more content than its predecessor, that doesn't mean there's more value. Don't forget that I've already experienced this gameplay for 80 hours, so giving more of the same isn't going to do it. When I start to notice that my interest in each game is cut in half every time I pay 59.99 for the next installment, my attitude starts to go rotten. My teeth grind, my fists clench, and I may kick the wall a couple of times because to me, 2 should mean more than 1, not less. If you want my money, you’d better earn it, or else I’ll go buy that brand new awesome original game instead, like uhh…umm…hmmm…you know what, we’re screwed.

   Tl;dr Modern Warfare 2 sucks.

The meaning of life was really in there somewhere! Just watch it again and keep looking.

But seriously though, am I the only one that thinks that maybe some of the disappointment is actually the fault of the viewers for setting such high expectations? When has anything in life ever met the expectations Lost fans had for the finale? Seriously?

You can rant all day about how the writers didn't give you the "answers" you wanted...but I'm glad that they didn't do it like they did in the Matrix where it was some old fart sitting in a chair explaining everything to Neo in an absurdly pretentious manner that created an emotional disconnect between the movie and everyone watching it. Sure, maybe you'd get your answers, but what do you lose in exchange for them? You lose the entire mysterious nature of the show. The series was fun because it was puzzling, and it still is, and I'd like to keep it that way. Lost will always be a mystery, and also a fantastic show. I can't think of a better way for them to have ended it.

Halo games for me have gotten boring more and more quickly after I've bought them. Halo 3 was good for a couple of months, Halo: ODST returned to its home at my local gamestop via trade-in a mere month after being bought, and I have almost zero desire to join my friends in Halo: Reach beta matches after just two weeks of playing.

I must have some sort of Halo repellant or some curse that makes me unable to enjoy Halo games as much as my friends do. My friends were playing Halo 3 a year after I had traded it in but I was unphased...when I'm done with a game, I'm done.

Thoughts on Mass Effect trilogy

For me, one of my greatest gaming disappointments was the original Mass Effect. However, Mass...

For me, one of my greatest gaming disappointments was the original Mass Effect. However, Mass Effect 3 is now probably my number 1 most anticipated game. It's funny how a massively improved sequel changed my entire perception of the trilogy as a whole.

Mass Effect 2 sucked me into its characters and story. I loved making decisions that affected the way it played out. I was addicted to it and absolutely HAD to complete everything in the game before moving on. Once I finished it I was inspired to buy Mass Effect again for my PC (I bought Mass Effect originally for 360, sold it, bought Mass Effect 2 on PC...so had to rebuy the original) and so far it's been an up-and-down experience for me.

Sometimes I just get too distracted by how underdeveloped all of its elements are in comparison to Mass Effect 2. It lacked the focus and production quality of the second installment, but I still find the ability to make good and bad decisions an enthralling concept, and while I know it's not an original concept at all, I still feel it is exceptionally well done here. The writing is just so far above anything else out there in video games that you can't fault it for being unoriginal, it's just simply done WELL.

My major qualms with the original game on 360 are the same on PC...the inventory system sucks to manage...why must it be so cumbersome converting everything that I don't want to omni-gel? Also, the AI is absolutely terrible. Enemies will either charge you with reckless abandon or stay put and let you shoot at them, and I find the cover system almost completely pointless considering you are just as vulnerable when you peak out from a piece of cover as you are when you are merely standing next to it. The enemies also do not recoil at all when you shoot them, which gives them all a robotic lifelessness that makes gun fights utterly boring.

Part of me hopes for an all-in-one package to be released one day with all three of the Mass Effect games bundled in one and the original's game-play improved with better AI and gun-play...except my logical half says it's not gonna happen. Sure, long elevators and load times and graphical texture issues are bothersome but...none of them compare to the disappointment of the third-person shooting mechanics in this game.

I do like the little touches here and there that foreshadow the events in the second game, such as the quests where you are fighting Cerberus and such.

I've had friends and acquaintances tell me that they miss Mass Effect's weapon system and story. I can't help but disagree completely. I just don't like managing the inventory in this game, it's too tedious and doesn't make me feel like it really makes any difference other than taking away from the pacing of the game having to sit there and convert everything to omni-gel, especially since you don't know if a weapon or upgrade is useful until you've already put it into your inventory. I'd rather just have the same weapon and level it up throughout the game.

As for the story, well I think the story was expanded on to great effect because it had more towns where you could talk to people and explore, where the first game just had the citadel. More towns made a big difference for me, it gave more color and life to the universe...and I don't miss the Mako's desert planet missions either. Sure, scanning planets isn't any fun either, but I'd rather that than to have to wait through a loading time just to land on a planet that looks...exactly the same as all the other ones . It's just unnecessary. Scaling the exploration down in that sense was a good decision, and side quests on planets you could land on are now more focused in Mass Effect 2...they feel crafted and designed rather than generated by 1's and 0's.

Side-quest in Mass Effect 1

I'm very impressed by how much Bioware improved every aspect of the franchise from one game to the other, and made me fall in love with its universe. It's so good I'm going back to play a game that I once felt was a pretty bad game just so I can get the bonuses and the sense of completion before I jump into the inevitable third installment...whenever it comes. I truly believe Mass Effect is the Star Wars of video games and I can't wait for the next installment. :bouncy:

I called Amazon today after learning that the Canon service center will in fact guaranteed not be able to ship my camcorder back before my trip to Taiwan. Amazon customer service was kind and understanding and promptly sent us an email saying that a replacement camcorder would be coming tomorrow. I now realize calling Amazon in the first place would've been a better idea, but I was hoping to get the tape that was lodged permanently inside the camcorder back because it has precious footage on it, and now both problems are solved.

Bravo, Amazon :applause:.

Only to have it blow up in your face and make you feel sorry you ever did it?

I've been building a website for my neighbor for a long time. Every time I make a change he wants something else done to it. It's the never-ending job.

And what's worse is that he acts like it's my fault that it's taking so long for it to be "done". I'd like to know what the word "done" means in his dictionary because in my dictionary it means a website that displays his work quickly and smoothly without looking tacky and provides his contact information and a biography about himself and what he does. My website features all of these. I've spent many hours and days that I'd like to have back worrying about the changes that he wants made to the website, only so that he can continue to be unsatisfied.

Let me clarify before anyone says I shouldn't complain if I have a job to do.

1. I am not being paid a dime for this. He took me to halloween horror nights for free one evening but that's about 45 dollars that I could've saved anyway by not going. It's a kind gesture, but it doesn't nearly compensate.

2. He's never consistent. One moment he'll love the work I do and then the next he'll think it's he worst thing he's ever seen. He never blames anything on me, but enough is enough. Either you like the website I made for you, or you don't. Stop pestering me.

3. Today he outright texted me + emailed me (a one-two punch, if you will) that I was taking too long to "finish" his website. I "finished" his website a long time ago, everything else past the point where it could be considered "finished" has just been favor after favor after favor. It's been six months. SIX. MONTHS. And I still have to carry this weight and I've just about had it. I don't like terminating friendships, but if he tests me one more time like he did today then I just might have to, just to get this all over with.

A couple of weeks back my mom did the best thing ever for me and bought me the camcorder that I...

A couple of weeks back my mom did the best thing ever for me and bought me the camcorder that I desperately wanted for christmas. It is a very expensive camcorder that records in HD and uses Mini DV tapes, producing the maximum image quality that I wanted so badly. One of the main MAIN reasons that I wanted this camcorder was so that I could record my upcoming trip to Taiwan/Japan next month. I leave on this trip on the 31st. Problem is, my camcorder is on its way to the service center right now, and I don't know when it will come back.

The camcorder will not eject the tape that is in it. It's a Canon VIXIA HV40, and the tape eject mechanism is motorized, so the tape is stuck in there. The tape has important footage on it, I can't simply record over it and send it in after the trip, and I need more than an hour's worth of tape to record on.

The camcorder should be arriving at the service center tomorrow, and from then, they told me that it will take 2-3 business days to process it, then 5-7 business days after that is how long it will take to fix the camcorder + ship it back, maybe shorter maybe longer depending on the amount of work needed to be done. That means at minimum it will take 7 business days, and at maximum it will take 10 business days.

I DO NOT HAVE TEN BUSINESS DAYS

...and with my luck, it'll take even longer than that. Last year my Xbox 360 started scratching my discs and I sent it in to microsoft for repair and didn't get it back for two months.

TWO
MONTHS

and this past summer I was having internet problems and it took 11 technicians and THREE MONTHS to finally get it fixed.

I have the worst customer service experiences ever, so at this point I'm all out of hope.

What upsets me the most about this whole thing is that my trip to Taiwan is pretty much a once in a lifetime thing. It's a memory I want to cherish, and it's the REASON I WANTED THE CAMCORDER. Now, due to a hardware malfunction, Canon is going to take that from me. I am just beyond upset right now, and I need somewhere to vent my frustration.

I'm seeking help from any CAGs out there who have been to the Japan airport and have possibly had to stay there overnight on their own. I have a trip to Taiwan coming up in January, and the trip back involves a 20 hour long overnight stay in Japan for the connecting flight.

This is the ONLY flight that has the convenient arrival and departure times that I need. My questions are, a. will they let me leave the Japan airport without a special visa, and b. are there hotels that have shuttles going straight from the Narita airport and then back the next day? How dangerous is it to stay in Japan alone when it's only for a night?

I'm finding it hard to find this information on google. Any help would make me a happy CAG.

did this for my 3D design class. I incorporated two of my broken 360 controllers, one black, one white, into a dragon. Later I added legs. I got an A+ for this and the teacher called it one of the best works of the semester. Awesome :D.
