This is more of an informal review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360.
While I love the multi-player mode, along with Spec-Ops mode, I felt disappointed by the single-player campaign. There was something that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare did so well in that of delivering high stakes in terms of character and plot. While playing through COD:MW2, I felt little attachment to the character I was playing, with the exception of Roach, due to (SPOILER) the fact that many of the characters that you play end up dying. This was a convention that COD4:MW used very well when you did not expect it but it seems that Infinity Ward threw in the same convention for the sake of shock value.
I did not think that I had enough time to care enough about the character to have their death have a big impact on me. Perhaps it is something to do with being able to simply re-spawn after your death in games that takes us out of having empathy for a character that plot or depth within character make up for.
I feel that I am expecting more than I should with the plot and character development in COD:MW2 but I think that such a thing is to be expected, especially after the fantastic single-player experience that COD4:MW gave us. Also, having only played the single-player campaign in four hours-albeit on a Normal difficulty setting-I feel a bit upset that it was over so soon. I did not feel inclined to put the harder difficulties to the test as the only thing I felt that I would gain out of it would be achievements; why would I want to put myself in a harder difficulty for characters or a story that I felt were somewhat flat?
This is simply my take on the single-player aspect of the game. I am thoroughly impressed with Spec-Ops mode, as well as the multi-player mode in COD:MW2. They have certainly raised the bar in multi-player and I think that it is one of the sole reasons to purchase this game. However, I do not feel that $60-plus is worth the experience of a fantastic new mode, as well as an upgraded. yet still not overhauled and revamped, multi-player system. Though, to that end, why completely overhaul it if it isn't broken?
I believe that I would give COD:MW2 a second try if the price point was half what it is now but with the single-player experience what it is, I do not feel that I will hold on to it when it is at the high value it is at now.
