To put your team on CPU, you select the game you want to put to CPU, then I think the option is "enable cpu against opponent" or something along those lines.

As far as advancement, it's usually the morning of the day after the deadline, meaning you have thru the end of the due date. For results, you should be able to see them by using the trigger a few times in the home menu to see box scores
