I can confirm that the Capsule is only required for downloading. It runs fine for me without the need for the Capsule. As for speeds, mine was just as fast as my Steam downloads, so yay. Sacred 2 Gold is larger than I expected, clocking it at 13.6GB, though less than the 20GB it lists on GMG for required HDD space.
