If you want to be anal about $299.99 instead of $299 than you need to to make the accurate statement that it is .99 cents more and not a $1.00 more. Also, Sony is behind the $299 campaign, here is their commercial:
The $299 is more likely the MSRP and if a retailer decides to sell it for more or less that is their decision. Usually reatilers sell MSRP items for less and not more, but if that is Sony's MSRP and the retailers charge .99 cents more than that is not necesarily Sony's fault.
