You're right. The only reason people like it is because it's likely one of the first ones they saw. It's a slightly above-average anime that received acclaim due to a lack of quality competition around the time when it was released and its prominent status on Cartoon Network. There are hundreds of better series out there.

If you don't count Pokemon/Digimon, I believe Escaflowne was the first anime I watched. I hold it in pretty high regard probably for that reason.
