When did scanlines on CRTs stop being so obvious? I own a 2003ish Trinitron, and I don't really see any of the lines "old time gamers" keep touting. What advantages does it have over a regular clean display?

Being true to the original source. Most of us have HDTVs that make classics look terrible. Playing on a non-flat tube tv makes it much more enjoyable.

Yeah, the photo isn't really necessary.

Since modern displays are capable of a resolution far greater than what old consoles can do, emulators have to use some tricks to get the small image to display across the entire height of the screen.

The most common approach is to double or triple the size of each pixel, but that can cause the image to look very blocky and give the pixels a hard looking edge to them.

To your question: scanlines take advantage of an optical illusion where every nth horizontal line on the screen is left blank. It's left up to the player's mind to subconsciously fill in the gaps. Scanlines don't completely replicate the exact same image that you'd see on your Trinitron, but it manages to trick the mind into thinking that it's looking at a very similar looking low-rez display without making too many compromises.

The website for the Neo Geo X has been updated with a FAQ section, here:

http://neogeox.com/FAQ

Most interestingly, starting November 1 the Neo Geo X Gold system will be sold by quite a few new retailers (besides the current Gamestop and Amazon). These include Target, Toys R Us, Walmart, AAFES, and Ebgames.

There is also mention in the FAQ about other planned games to be released on cards, but no specific games are mentioned yet.

If you preorder from those other retailers do you still get the bonus game Ninja Masters? Personally, might be worth preordering from GS just to get that additional game included in the set.

Quite honestly I had no intention of getting this system until I came across this thread. Reading about this system makes me want it more and more. Can't wait to get the complete package!

No word on that yet, but I would assume that any preorders would get the Ninja Master's game card, since both Gamestop and Amazon offer it with their Neo Geo X Gold preorder bundles. Once the product pages are up at those websites, it should be pretty clear whether the bonus game is included or not.

This is great information; looks like I'll be preordering the whole package very soon!
Thanks for posting the response. Glad I pre-ordered.

Amazon explicitely states that their bundle also includes the Ninja Masters X card.

Neo Geo X's website also states that the game comes in every Gold bundle. I think youre covered =)

Been eyeing this since it was announced. I just dont think ill ever really use it. I dont get to use the consoles i have right now very much and if i got this its just compete with my Vita for handheld time. Maybe if an bombs and has a significant price cut ill jump on it.

I put an order in for the Gold Limited Edition and an extra stick. If Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us start taking orders in November, it's likely they'll be around through the holiday season. Might become one of the "hot Toys" for the holidays. More sales will likely mean we'll see more cards released with some of the more popular games. Would also be cool if they manage to push some NeoGeo Pocket games on this thing. I'm curious about this supposed special "format" they're talking about for the card's security.. Will likely be cracked within a few months and before you know it, we'll be seeing alot of copied SD cards on Ebay..

I don't know about you guys but I have to play neo geo on an arcade cabinet. I have the home system but never use it. got a cabinet and a 120 in 1 cart and that's how it's done. you can find neo geo cabs for a few hundred dollars. if you have space for it, it's the way to go. also the motherboards are cheap. you can get a 1 slot for less than $100 if the board goes bad. so really the only issue with the arcade cabs is if the monitor goes.

You'll eventually be able to buy additional titles.

I finally ordered this from Amazon. I was gonna wait a while - but the Amazon listing says the "LE is only available for preorders made before 12/6."

Do you guys think that is true? Or a 'scare tactic' ....

Could be a 'scare tactic', no way to know for sure. You'd assume that a decent quantity of Gold systems will be produced with the Ninja Master's card included, and after the bundle releases 12/6 those should still be around. But things are still a bit up in the air about this, including plans for releasing future games on memory cards. Personally I think they'd do well to roll out a bunch of games on cards at launch (like the rest of the Metal Slug games, my favorites on the Neo Geo), to catch sales while the hype is pretty high.

Also, I'm still waiting for more "hands-on" videos of the handheld and docked system (to TV) in action. I have this on preorder from Amazon now, but I'd like to see more about the whole thing prior to launch.

EDIT: New Neo Geo X hands on preview from Gamespot:
