I have no experience with the game but from what I saw in a video review you need the costumes to open up new parts of the game, you can either fork up the real cash to open them early or grind the first levels over and over until you get enough in game cash to unlock them.

The costumes double as new songs. You can play through the entire game without any IAP and still play all of the songs, but the "interlude" levels where you travel between boss battles are limited to which costumes you've unlocked (only 2 without IAP).

No arguments from me that it's a gratuitous money grab, but I still think the base game is worth 99 cents.

If you can use virtual controls you should like it, I had problems with it though. The game is pretty fun but with the camera view and controls I was never able to finish it. For a dollar though I'd say it's worth a try, I paid 3 and don't feel ripped off.

I don't know if it was on the DS, I just got it a few years ago for the PC and then this past February when I got my iPhone. The same game goes by a few different names, the most often used one is Link-A-Pix.

I hate to ask this, seems like it always gets asked when a game goes for free, but how are the IAPs in The Bard's Tale? Seems like there are a few of them, didn't know if they were necessary or just add-on types. Thanks
