Can anyone actually recommend Risen 2? This is the cheapest I've ever seen it but I don't know if that means it's worth, you know, paying money for.

There's actually a demo up on Steam. I was turned off at how they changed melee combat.

The base game of Risen 2 itself (excluding the DLC) is actually decent for what it is but they did so many things wrong with the release of this game it's not even funny.
  • They shipped it with some wonky combat like not being able to block, which they did fix in an update but by then all the damage had been done in the gaming press reviews.
  • They delayed the console release.
  • They didn't promote the game well at all, at least not stateside.
  • They used a 2 in the title which puts people off; they should have just called it Risen: Dark Waters. The first game is not well known so they really just needed a fresh start. It's very different from the first game anyhow.
  • They went with Steamworks, which for a lot of us is a bonus, but for the old stodgy hardcore Euro fan base of Risen and Piranha Bytes who get the pitchforks out at the mere mention of Steam was a slap in the face. And they raged and badmouthed the game as much as they could.
  • Etc etc

Overall I think it's a good game if you're okay with a more linear and story based RPG and aren't expecting total open world like Skyrim. The world does open up considerably about 1/3 of the way in when you get a ship, but it's still not a total sandbox game.

I do think it's worth $7.50 but OTOH if you waited this long and won't play it right away anyway it will probably be $5 at some point.

*Edit: I don't know if the demo has the patched combat or not. It's not that much different but there were some very important changes like being able to block and dodge/roll. I never really liked combat in Piranha Bytes games anyway so it's wasn't a huge feature for me here either, but having companions with you does help and I liked the voodoo magic system as well as the guns. Overall though I played for story and atmosphere which I think it does rather well.

The main thing PB (the developer) does wrong is pander to consoles. Hopefully they decide to get out from under the yoke of publishers and strike out on their own but I won't hold my breath.

You can find this on their FB page, if you receive one these and are in the process of filing a chargeback with either paypal or your CC issuer, it might be a good idea to save it in case the need arises and you need further documentation on your chargeback process.

Far Cry 2 taught me that central Africa is about 70% populated with white dudes so they had to make up for it somehow.

Is this like an eBay Paypal dispute where you have 45 days to file? I'd prefer not to file just yet since I am willing to see whatever they can come up with but I don't want to screw myself over by filing too late.

Story focused and is a decent game?

SAY NO MOAR!
Any more PC RPGs that are story focused that aren't* silly, rely too much on player decision that just ends up incoherent and disappointing to largely everyone(ME) or don't have silly stilted dialogue conversations from Dialogue trees/choices(I hate this convention so much. But I can deal with it)?

Well, hmm, don't expect Shakespeare. Risen 2 doesn't take itself too seriously and can be silly at times. I like it overall, but there are some corny jokes here and there.

I think it did a good job creating a fun pirate environment but I wouldn't call it dark and gritty either. I felt like it did a good job at being humorous without going overboard (most of the time).

Basically, it's kind of a grand pirate adventure. Something along the tone of Pirates of the Caribbean.

If you go in expecting serious bidness you may be disappointed but if you want a pirate adventure I thought it was a lot of fun.

*ETA: There are decisions but they don't usually effect the game hugely. The biggest one comes down to whether you side with one particular faction or another about a third of the way in. Then that effects which party member you get and whether you go for a ranged combat or magic style.

Better yet play Gothics 1 and 2, instead.

I'd consider buying Risen 2 if I could be sure that it was supposed to be that price (so I could pay with blue coins to use up the ~$3 worth that I have.) However, I don't want to risk it being a mistake and the price being changed before I manage to check out.

They look hideously dated, though I do love Gothic 2.

I dunno, Risen 1 is free on VOID. Well for the time being. Better enjoy because who the hell knows what's going to happen with Gamersgate.

I really did like the pirate setting in Risen 2 though. I think it sets it apart from the other PB games and most RPGs in general. They had a good thing going with the tone and setting I just think they needed to keep this thing in development a little longer (the patch they pushed had fixes that should have been in the version that shipped), promote it better, not piss people off with the trivial crap day 1 DLC that was actually baked into the base game and so forth.

Yeah they're dated but they're still classics and better than 90% of games published today. Old graphics don't bother me at all -- mostly because I've lived through everything since Atari 2600.

I remember that joystick that the Atari had...that was bad but I guess the games were not complex enough for it to be a problem. But still...

borderlands 2 show serial gave me this today.

"Unfortunately, we are out of serial keys. The developers have been contacted and we will supply keys as soon as they are delivered to us. We apologize for the inconvenience."

They were basically emulating current arcade controls which 90% of the time was a stick and a button or two.

Every time I try and use VOID, my antivirus freaks out and quarantes a file or two. I know I could setup exceptions, but I've yet to be motivated enough to actually bother.

Hmm...maybe that's a little too lazy of me, going to try and get it worked out now.
