McKay Books & Games (Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville -- Tennessee)

The new Nashville store just opened today:

Quote:
636 Old Hickory Blvd
Nashville, TN 37209

They used to be located on Charlotte Pike, but have now moved to a bigger store.

The original Knoxville store has been in this location forever:

Quote:
230 Papermill Pl Way
Knoxville, TN 37919-4867
(865) 588-0331
I always check it out whenever I'm visiting Knoxville.

There's also a Chattanooga location, but I've never been there:

Quote:
7734 Lee Hwy
Chattanooga, TN 37421-1028
(423) 892-0067
They have tons of cheap games for all the major systems since the NES.

Over the last year or so they have raised the prices of their ps1 era and up games. Only good deals you get on them if you find them in the very scratched section for 4.49.

For the most part they overprice more known games but you do find gems, the other day i picked a boxed complete dreamcast for $25, boxed complete original gameboy for $13, gameboy color for $12.

Granted you can find this stuff probably cheaper at thrift stores but i can easily make 3-4x that back on ebay.

Don't bother try looking for rare games here for cheap (atleast the knoxville location) because they ebay price them, you can usually get systems for really cheap and more less-known games for cheaper then you would at ebay but like the other guy said, for the most part they have been raising the prices on old games which is a shame, also their blu-ray pricing is stupidly overpriced, they pretty much price all blu-ray movies at $15, or did the last time i looked, even $5 blu-rays from walmart go for $15 here.

Yeah I wouldn't bother going there for current-gen games.

But they have some good deals on games for older systems.

Last time I was in I found Resident Evil 2 (Gamecube) for $15, which is half of what it would go for on eBay/Amazon.

Yeah, prices are pretty high on games at the Chattanooga location, but you can occasionally find decent deals. I've had more luck with getting clean discs there than at Gamestop, too.

The thing I like most, though, is I can trade in old books and DVDs (at fairly good rates) and then use that credit to buy the occasional game if I don't find other books & DVDs I want. A little more flexibility is worth it.

I went last weekend to the Bellevue location and man the prices there are just getting out of hand.

I guess the Internet has pretty much killed the days of finding bargains at local game shops.

Hows the trade in rate for blu-ray movies?

I have been thinking about liquidating my blu-ray collection and most places around me (murfreesboro) seem to give really crappy trade value. I really hate dealing with ebay but I might split them into a few auctions and deal with it.

I think I have pinned down the general rule of ttrade credit: take the sell value, half it, and then take 10-20% off that for cash or add 10-20% for credit. This varies widely but is a general idea.

McKays has really crappy customer service. They would sell and operate so much better if they had an automatic inventory dump to their website (scan it in via trade, automatically populates on site).

I've picked up some pretty great deals in there very scratched section. So far everything has worked, and I've managed to grab Pikmin 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, Wind Waker, Psychonauts, and so many others I cant remember for $5 each. Most of my original xbox collection is from there lol worth a look everytime I go. I do wish they had an online store/inventory check, but don't expect them to add one soon:(

I bought a scratched GameCube Paper Mario for $5 many months ago and it didn't work. Just got a disc read error and wouldn't even boot up.

The main reason I bought it through was because the case and inserts were in excellent shape. You are taking a gamble everytime you buy from their scratched section.

The rest of their "normal" prices these days are ridiculous. I haven't been there in months now because their pricing on games has gotten to the point where eBay and Amazon are actually cheaper.

I rarely buy games or movies at McKay's, but I rack up on books and vinyl. They have great deals on some hard to find graphic novels.
