Beat it, playing the postgame now. All of the problems with the game have been covered in detail in this topic already (crap AI, only ok battle system, meh story and characters). I still really am enjoying it a ton despite its flaws.

I really think Level 5 got a pass on this game because of the subject matter. Under the hood is an underdeveloped game with glaring flaws but because Ghibli is god in the eyes of anime fans, we're willing to forgive the shortcomings. It oozes charm and has just enough rewarding gameplay to keep players coming back. I'll admit I got caught up in the min/maxing of familiar stats, but broke the game as a result.

BTW, make sure you get all the casino RIP tickets to view the cinematics because it unlocks a previously unavailable extended version of the Surly & Smiley show. The Japanese version is soooooooooooo much funnier than the English VO.

One other flaw i can think of is how there are so little cinematics. Im okay reading text boxes when im talking to people during exploration but when progressing with the main quest or speaking to main characters to advance the game, id rather have a more cinematics or atleast audio with subtitles.

You just reminded me of a small thing that bugs me personally. I set text scroll to fastest so it just pops up, but every time I go into a story related text, it still scrolls sooooo slow. It makes for an extra button press to speed it up, and/or a false advancement in the text because I hit X on a shorter line.

Bingo. If this wasn't Ghibli and did not have the charm to it, I might have quit awhile back. This game has a certain charm to it that makes me want to keep playing. In other words I get sucked into the world and well when I get sucked into a world, I usually do as much as I can in a game.

About 13 hours in and Oliver's around level 21 with Ester about half a level behind.

I just got the cauldron and spoke to the ship captain. It's really dumb that the game makes you go to a new city only to backtrack to the one you just came from.

Aside from speaking to every npc each time there's a new plot event, is there some way to tell who gives you formulae? I got some from a lady on the boat before the ship.

I do have the guide but only use that for hidden items and chests or to look at what familiars are in the area.

There isn't. I usually just found them from talking to the people in town. Going to list some that I found in spoiler tag to help you.

1. Lady in with a basket on her head in Castaway Cove. 2. Old Lady in Hamelin near Swift Solutions. 3. Pirate on the Ship in Skull Mountain. 4. There is a tomete kid fishing in Yule. 5. There is a boy in Perdida standing next to his sister. These are the ones that I found a know of. Other Formulae will be obtained through doing swift solution quest.

The main thing that gets me is the big world and exploration and quests. It's probably a major reason why I enjoyed Xenoblade as well. Same basic concept even though the execution is way different. Ni No Nuni's battle system, story, and characters all need major work, but I still really enjoyed it due to reasons above. If you aren't big on doing quests and exploring in JRPGs and just like to get to Point A to Point B, god help you you will hate this game.

I think I am starting to get annoyed at this game. I like RPG games with quests. Xenoblade was fantastic. This game is ing annoying with the horrible AI and well the almost non existent capture chance rates.

I mean when it takes you 35 minutes to capture 1 out of 3 monsters, that's MMO work right there. The charm this game has is slowly fading. Yet I still want to stick with it for now.

Yeah, the quest design is horrid and repetitive. If not for the merit rewards, nobody would do them. I didn't mind the grind so much but some of them cross the line in terms of time vs reward. The asshole collecting data on familiars is the prime evil in this and the girl in the cave who wants you to level her familiar up 10 levels as well. Those two should have been cut from the game IMO.

Well, I guess I haven't been jaded yet, since I'm still enjoying the game, tho the weaknesses in the combat system is starting to show. I'm wondering if it is just best to just keep to one of the characters and just cast spells the whole time during boss battles, since your companions don't manage themselves all that well. I also kinda wish that tactics was a hotkey rather than one of the selections on your wheel.

That's what I've been doing for ages now... it's better than having one or both of them set to heal, wherein they usually focus healing on Oliver and one of them ends up dying.

Of course, if I heal and let them fight ("do what you want" or "give it your all"), they're almost as stupid. Unlike earlier in the game, Esther now uses too many physical attacks (her familiars are all magic specialists) instead of special attacks. Swaine goes through his MP like it's free (and half the attacks he does are status altering ones, that do not work on bosses) and sometimes, he just plain stops doing anything for 5-10 in any fight that lasts more than 30 seconds. But at least they don't die and Oliver can get in an attack or two every now and then.

I've just going to finish the game now, I'm think I'm getting close (just got past "the truth"). The fetch quests have become tiresome and the 3rd tier bonuses don't seem as good (besides the big one).

I have kind of a weird question. If you fast ravel away from your boat and it isn't possible to walk your way back to it does the boat respawn somewhere? Or is it not possible to fast travel away from a place where there isn't a town or main area? For instance if you take your boat to a small island like the one near the fairy island and then try to travel off of it while your boat is still on the shore are you just screwed because you can't travel back to the island you left?

Sorry if that's confusing lol it's just something I have been pondering as I'm now basically done with Hamelin and ready to go try to battle some toko's for the first time.

Nope, your boat will always appear at the closest shore to where you are when you fast travel. So, if you leave it at some small island and fast travel to Ding Dong Dell, it'll now be at the beach near the town. If you fast travel to Al Mamoon, then it'll be at Cateaway Cove (since that's the closest shore).

But I would suggest you keep going on the story... you're about to get a much better travel method in an hour or two.

I liked most of the quests. :( You all know I have some weird tastes though. But yeah, Derwin (though thank GOD his last quest in the post-game isn't collecting shitty familiars) and that girl.

I was really excited for this game, but you people have convinced me that this isn't for me. It sounds... tedious. I do love the art style though. I'll probably pick it up when it hits $20.

Seeing that the game wasnt mass produced as other namco games i doubt this will be $20 game.

OK that's good to know. I was going to do some more side quests and a little toko farming but it sounds like I should just keep going in the story for a bit more. I'm guessing you are referring to the dragon ?

EDIT: About ready to improve my means of travel YAY!
