Dead PS3 and Repair Time

Well if you have been reading the CoD4 thread, you probably know I have a dead PS3 now. But since not everybody reads every thread, I'll post this topic also. After being really excited for CoD, I found out it doesn't seem to like my system, as it would shut off my system completely and force me to reset it in the back. It did it once in single player, and than worked for for the little bit I did play it, since I mainly wanted to try MP online. Than it did that each time I got online within a minute or two, and only once did I get to play for an hour or so, and it was a damn great experience. Than it went back to doing the shut off thing.

Well I thought maybe it was just a bad disc and got it exchanged at Best Buy but it still did the same thing online. So I decided, it at least I can play offline single player, correct? Nope. As it has now brick my system and the game is stuck inside it.

Now what I want to know, is how long I can expect to be without my PS3, Sony is already sending me a coffin and it should arrive next week, hopefully. Does anybody know what the turnaround time is, and what the whole process is, will I get my old system back, a refub, a new one? This going to suck since I know I'll probably lose all my game saves and shared games.

Update: Received the Return box, took a week to get here from Texas to Alaska, the return label is Next Day Air. Will drop it off tomorrow at The UPS store or something.
Sent it off 11/15. Arrived at the repair center 11/16. Still No update on the repair status or anything on their Playstation Repair Status site 11/17. If there is still nothing on there tomorrow, 11/18 I'll give them a call to make sure they got it and see what's going on since it said it would take a day or so for it to be updated on there and that has pass.

Tagged. I'm interested to see what experience you have.

Most particularly, what kind of PS3 you have, and what you get in return (as well as turnaround time).

Sony's repair staff must feel like the Maytag Man compared to the Microsoft crew in Texas.

It's a 60 gb model, got it in early September from gamestop.

Additional info on how I used the system, it was connected to the internet via a ethernet cable and not wifi. It has plenty of room to breath and I live in the frozen north, Alaska so overheating wouldn't be a problem for the most part. Also before it died, I could play every other game I had fine, no problems at all.

I experienced trouble with my PS3 back in late December-early January. My PS3 was having difficulty with certain downloaded demos. The games would cause my system to beep 3 times and shut down no more than a minute or two into them.

I called Sony and received my box in about 5 days. I sent the box in on a Tuesday and got my new PS3 on Thursday of the same week. It was incredible. Now, I don't know if they've changed their service for any reason between now and then, but it's certainly possible. I'm pretty sure my coffin was an overnight box as well.

They also sent me a brand new PS3 instead of a refurb/fixing my console. I'd be interested to see if that practice still applies or how the turnaround time will be affected if they fix yours instead.

Overall, my experience was very positive.

From what I have heard, Sony does send out another 60GB. You can back-up your saves on a USB flash, SD Card, MS, etc. You will have to re-download all your PSN stuff though, but it's all tagged to your account (It's not like the 360 where you must be online always to access your content, unless you call and get back codes).

Why would I get a 40 gb back? I'm pretty much expecting or hoping to get a 60 gb back.

As to backing up my game saves, I wish I did do that before this happen, it's totally dead now. Won't turn on at all. So unless I can somehow extract the saves I'm SOL on that, and that is really what pisses me off more than anything else.

If the hardware is dead, then wouldn't they just throw your old hard drive into the new system? Also, I wonder if your computer could recognize the disk format from your ps3. since its just a standard notebook drive, it isn't too much of a reach to think you could extract your saves.

It would be BS if they gave you back a 40gb. I really don't think they'll do that, but if they do make sure you complain, lots.

No, as I posted in some random thread I had to call Sony abt my dead 60 gig as well (as far as I know, the NFS Prostreet demo killed it). Luckily there is nothing currently in the PS3.

The first question I asked the support lady when I had a chance is would I have to send my HDD and what would happen to it. She told me, yes I would have to send it in, and all my data would unfortunately be erased. I believe she told me I could expect it back in 7-10 business days as soon as Sony received it max.

I have someone willing to let me throw my saves on a jump drive, but I have to figure out how to remove the hard drive (I'm assuming doing so doesn't void the warranty). I'm hoping that if I have the chance to do that, the hard drive won't damage the other system at all; it shouldn't.

As far as the COD situation, I said in the earlier thread that my recent PS3 failure kinda has me wary of even playing COD 4. I also remember several problems with COD 3. I'm gunshy now, but even if I have prolems w/ COD4 I guess it's not really that big of a deal. You'd think Activision would have figured it out by now though.

To rodeojones: Snooping around on the official Sony boards, I noticed there were several threads discussing COD4 doing the same thing to PS3s. There was also someone that had a similar problem as me after the NFS demo.

Are they gonna give you a new COD4 or give you yours back?

That's a good question, but on the form they have you fill out when you send the system in, there is a section regarding stuck games in the system, so hopefully I'll get it back, since $54 dollars is like a full day of work for me.

Just happened to me playing the new Lego Star Wars game. I was playing and then all of a sudden the system just died. I thought maybe the plug had come undone, but I checked it and it was fine.

I tried resetting it in the back and the little red light comes on but then when I hit the power button on the front, it tries to turn on and the little green light flashes for a second and then just dies again.

I guess I'll have to call Sony.

Happened to me, too

Hi. I just registered on CAG so I could tell you that the exact same thing happened to me with COD4. I'm curious about the turnaround time as well; I actually found this thread via Google while searching for 'PS3 repair time.' Sorry to hear yours got bricked, too. If you want to read about my similar ordeal, follow the link over to my thread on AVS Forums, I'll be updating that board on my return experience:

So...once you redownload the stuff, it's tied to the new console so can be played online? Does that apply to PSP games (ie PS1 games) too?

And I thought Microsoft let you do the same thing now? Redownload stuff so it would be tied to the new system? I hate how these companies are handling this. At least it sounds like Sony's doing a better job than Nintendo (which has no method at all of transferring content). If Microsoft DID change their policy, then maybe it's because they had to match Sony's. If Sony really has the best policy, they should advertise that somehow. I have no clue how there's works.

The PSN games that you buy can be redownloaded up to four times, downloaded five times max, if I'm not mistaken, that is how people gameshare. So I'm not worry about that at all, it's a nice feature of the PS3.
