I heard of the glitched on CAG first a few months ago I think, somebody posted it on the contest/freebie forum. Suddenly Joystiq picked up this news and Kotaku decided to do the same.

at Cheapy once again bringing up the old ass gamesharing quotes since he has nothing post launch to back up his claims. I've criticized just that aspect of your defense and you re-used those quotes to combat the criticism. Come back with a quote from the past 3.5 years and maybe then you'll get people off of your back. That was one quote from before they knew how big that feature would be and have since backed off greatly to make it more of a gray area that they don't actively support anymore, which tells me a lot about their thoughts on the situation.

On the topic of your responsibility to the industry as members of the media in varying levels, you guys have done and said different that at least makes your holier than thou stance on the show questionable. I know Shipwreck has talked about before how he doesn't like to trade in the games he's received because he doesn't want to take away sales, but all three have gameshared a lot of games with each other and Shipwreck has sent some of the games he's received to Cheapy, Wombat, and others so they could play them without having to buy the game. Cheapy, Shipwreck, and Wombat have begged and pestered the others on the show about getting the game from their account. There's a different scope to the effect of those actions, but you guys aren't as the others.

I agree about how poorly designed the menus in Monday Night Combat are. You don't have to start a game to get back to the main menu, just click on a Blitz type to play and then push the B button to exit back to the main menu.

You can play one game online to get enough coins to buy a Bronze pack of cards. My first online game in Madden Ultimate Team got me 1400 coins with a win, so you get about two times the coins I get for playing against the CPU (600-900 coins). Maybe losses don't pay as well, but I've only had one complete game so far with MUT.

I'm fine with the unlock/booster stuff as long as you don't need to pay to get the same stuff, so I'm fine with people wanting to pay money for the coins to get a better pack of cards since that's not exactly something I'd expect people to exclusively do to get a good team. I know the most popular download on PSN for a few weeks after MLB 10 came out was the $0.99 DLC that gave you a ton of training points for the career mode, which seemed like virtual steroids to me.

I'd guess that Crystal Dynamics took the offer to give exclusivity to XBLA to be a part of the Summer of Arcade lineup that would happen before they could finish the game, so they sacrificed complete content for sales. They probably knew that the IP would draw in enough sales during SoA to make up for whatever drop in sales they'd get if they got a normal multiplatform release in September.

Shipwreck, Heavy Rain is a new IP that sold over 1 million worldwide and that isn't exactly a mainstream game in any sense. Borderlands is probably the best-selling new IP of 2009. A lot of the best-selling games of this generation were new IPs for this generation (Mass Effect, Uncharted, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, Wii Sports/Fit, and Batman: Arkham Asylum).

Good show.

Finally got around to listening this morning after downloading last night..great show indeed!

I was really surprised to hear Cheapy start talking about the Mafia II demo! That was the first thing I grabbed off the PSN update last Tuesday (yes before the Scott Pilgrim demo..which I haven't even tried yet) and immediately played it. I definitely played part one on the PC and the Xbox, but never really got that far into it. Since I'm Italian-American, and watched Goodfellas hundreds of times, I was really psyched to see a game coming out that caters to that kind of lifestyle.

The demo was good, but I wouldn't say great. I was really hoping the graphics would top GTA IV in realism, yet be on a better, newer engine to make it look even more realistic. Instead, the graphics were more like Saint's Row (cartoon-y, no sense of scale) and with a zoomed in camera that was a little too close..and I'm not sure if it was my TV or how I set the brightness on the game, but it looked really really bright, especially since it was supposed to be at night. I remember the first having a nice dark, gritty feel to it..this was not there in this sequel. Now, I did love the driving and found it vastly improved from the first. I wasn't excited at all about driving a car from the 30's or 40's whenever it is, kinda like riding a horse (!) in other games can become extremely boring..but as soon as I hit the gas, the feel of the car felt like modern day racing games, with very nice precision. The gunplay was pretty good too.

I already put $5 down on this game, really want the CE, but didn't want to put $10 down However, I'm pretty impressed and think I can get some enjoyment out of it. Plus, since it comes out the week of my birthday, I view it as a great gift to myself! Anyways, keep up the great work, I think you guys should contact Sirius XM and see if you can get the first all gaming satellite radio channel going!!

While you may be right that it might be technically a grey area, or even legal, it is beyond the point. Try and listen to what you said during the segment (starts at around 40min mark).

Here are some quotes:

"This is piracy"
"telling people how to get games for free"
"you have so little respect for it**, that youre just going to give out peoples product for free"
"We are all here because we like the industry, and we want to see it do well"
**((the video games industry))

No matter what anyone at Sony says, the publisher will get money for only _one_ copy, while missing out on money of up to 4 copies - permanently. Compare that to the XBLA glitch, which albeit being severe, probably only lasted for a very limited amount of time.

While I personally think that the 5 DL copy limit 'cheating' costs _way_ more than the XBLA glitch, its really irrelevant - The main point is that both are ways in which you essentially take money away from the maker of the games.

GentleCAGs,
You talked on the episode about there being no new IP this year that's been selling well. A quick scan of this year's Top 20 monthly sales (as per NPDs) show a couple of titles that you guys overlooked.
  • Just Dance has been a slow-burn success, albeit that it launched late last year, and has appeared in the NPD's Top 20 every month this year. Brand new IP, long legs.
  • Darksiders hit #10 in January, but then dropped off the charts. I'm willing to bet $20 that it performed well enough that we'll see a sequel.
  • Dante's Inferno hit #8 and 9 for 360 and PS3 respectively in Feb. Heavy Rain also hit #10 in the same month.
  • The rest of the new IPs to hit the Top 20 were MAG, Bayonetta, Mod Nation Racers.
Now, to be fair, that's only 7 new IPs that sold enough to make the Top 20 so far this year. For reference, there's 52 established IPs that appear in the Top 20 over the same time period.

But that fact in itself is telling. Publishers want to sell games, and sales data shows that new IPs are a much riskier proposition. So it's not surprising that we see so few new IPs, because the gaming public has repeatedly and consistently shown a bias towards the familiar.

Good show this week guys. The first one I've listened to in about 6 months.
I think it's a little hippocratic for a site called cheapassgamer to ban glitches for free games. I was laughing my ass off listening to your attempt to be moralistic. This whole site is devoted to getting things as close to free as possible. Why not just ban all deals and help Cheapy's bottom line.

Congrats on winning the Saints Row 3 contest. I just ordered the original game at your suggestions back in the older Cagcasts.

Speaking of which, at random, I happened to have been listening to Cagcast #139 for the first time today and caught your discussion (29 minute mark) about the disappointment of having no "Big Ass Chains" in Saints Row 2," and the foreshadowing your appearance in Saints Row 3.

Now that you're going to be in the game, are you going to use your internet space pimp status to try and get "Big Ass Chains" back into the franchise, or perhaps Wombat's idea of being a cranky jew porn shop owner? BTW... any interest with the upcoming Saints Row game on the 3DS?

(PS... if by random occurrence, this post is commented on, I have not had the chance to listen to this episode yet... so I don't know if this has been covered already.)

Hey, Cheapy, how about a clarification on how the Godaddy codes work.

I just tried to use the CAG10 code, thinking I would save 10% on my order, since I'm getting a deluxe hosting plan, domain reg and some add-on's, total order came out to $220, I entered that code, got $1.40 off (took only 10% off the domain reg only). I know they have codes for 20% off hosting plans, you should see about getting some more codes up, I'd rather use codes from here than FW so you can make the money.. but cheap is cheap..
