Not terribly exciting, but Casino Royale finally dropped (at CC, at least) to $10. Considering how dead the format is, it still doesn't sound great, but CR has steadfastly remained at $20 or over since March of 2007.

The collector in me was finally happy to get a reasonably priced copy.
You mean this Casino Royale?

Bump time. I am actually starting to buy some dirt cheap UMD movies. I got the Matrix recently, and I found a bunch of new 5 dollar copies of Hackers at Gamestop.

Lol. UMD.
I never understood why I would want to buy a movie in a proprietary format when I have a television and several things that play DVDs. Not to mention a computer with internet access. No offense to those who have/do buy them, I just don't understand the need, seems like a waste of money.

I'm really amazed that the UMDs that I have seen at retail are holding their retail price points at $10, and at its cheapest $5. Are you going to be seeing sub-$5 clearances any time soon? I surely hope so, but I still don't know if I'd accumulate a collection tho.

The PSP offers the ability to watch movies in extremely clear detail (for a screen so small, mind) so why not take advantage of it especially if the UMD movies are on sale? For someone who travels a lot like me, I like the fact that I can pack JUST my very portable PSP and have the choice to either play games, watch movies, listen to music, or all of the above.

That said, I recently picked up Metropolis for $5 myself in the bargain bin at Fry's Electronics and Hero and The Crow for a bit more apiece at... someplace else.

I'm currently looking to acquire Gone in 60 Seconds without having to pay full price (or even half price) for it.

@ lurknomore: I honestly think that the price point will stick to $5 being the cheapest for a while longer (major major sales dates nonwithstanding) because while UMD movies are on the unpopular side, there are enough people who collect the UMDs which keeps the price from dropping to sub-clearance levels (unless the movie in question is a B-grade or lower title). That, and Sony-branded things just... don't tend to go sub-clearance unless they are wildly unpopular or have been known to have manufacturing defects or are simply completely defunct. Just my two cents.

I haven't seen UMD movies at any other retailer except used at Gamestop. With PSN and lots of movies offering a "digital copy," is there really any reason besides portability to get a UMD version of a movie?

I have a portable DVD player available and a PSP. I'm going to look for a DVD vs. UMD on google.
