+1 to Salamando's advice. A 15.6" laptop weighs 10-14 lbs. You might not think that's a lot, but combine that with all the books your carrying and your back is going to hate you. I know carrying my huge laptop around made a difference back when I had it. If you're going for a laptop, you should be aiming for portability and nothing else. Get a 13" laptop for $300-$400 and then use the remaining $800-$900 to build a PC. I built mine for about $950 last year and I can play any game on high settings without a problem. Laptops will just get way too hot to get decent performance after an hour or more of gaming.

Check out dell.com/outlet. I have purchased many desktops and laptops for myself, friends, and family. Only had a problem with one system, a desktop, and they went above and beyond to take care of the problem. Everything in the outlet carries the same warranty as new systems but much cheaper. If you want to go high-end 15" I saw an Alienware M15x with i7-740QM, 8GB DDR3, BD, and 1.5GB 460M for $1489. Not exactly cheap, but it meets your requests. Dell Outlet often has coupons floating around that will get you 15-20% off, I think I have a $150 off coupon in my email. Inventory changes all the time, so this system may not be available by the time you see this, but they may have something better.

Unless you're getting a desktop, your laptop doesn't need the 1080p feature.

I hope I am able to find this.

Also, I realize that a desktop would be the preferred choice to do gaming on, but I need to conserve space in my dorm, and having to put a computer desk in to accommodate it isn't something that will help me do that. Also, from my research, I think you guys are a little off on your figures. The heaviest laptop that I've seen was a Qosimo that did EVERYTHING and was meant to be a desktop replacement, and it weighed 10.1 pounds with an 18.4" screen. I only want to have to get one computer, and be able to use it for everything. Once again, I thank all of you for the advice on the desktop, but that isn't what I want at the moment.

So, are these good deals, and which should I go with if they are? What do people think of MSi? Would really like opinions on this, thanks!

Can I get by with a core i5 processor if my GPU is powerful enough? I'm thinking of something with a core i5 and a GT 555M GPU. Will that be enough to run most games smoothly?

Yes. The i5 is great; the i7 is just crazy-good.
