I too have been less tempted at the $20 price point on the 3d titles, unless it was the Toy Story movies, which I had already bought before my tv.
Just trying to keep the thread on track. It is the '3D Blu-Ray thread'. I wasn't trying to be rude, either..

Looks like Thor 3D will be on sale for 19.99 at Best Buy this coming week. This is one I've passed on for a while...

Its 3d elements are pretty forgettable and, IMHO, are bad for the most part- it's pretty obvious it's a post facto 3D title.

Trying to find something positive to say about the 3d: I did like the CGI sequences involving the rainbow bridge and the 3d menu is really cool.

Aside from the 3D- I really liked the movie. Branagh had fun with the characters and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

I've noticed Piranha 3DD is $3.99 to rent on the Playstation store....I might try it for that. They are usually $7.50 for a 3D rental.

Supposedly target is going to have it for 19.99 because the regular blu ray version does not have everything advertised in the ad.

UGh.....now I have to try and return my Best Buy preorder...such a hassle going to multiple stores. Although, with Best Buy silver, I have 60 days to pricematch....odds are the 3D version will be cheap, correctt?

I saw that however from what I read(correct me it I'm wrong) this is a store by store basis so not every one can do this. Also since this is the Target edition BestBuy does not have to price match it.

I don't think so. It even showed 19.99 on their website today, which is now sold out. All stores will give it to you for $19.99, I wouldn't worry about it. But, there are few copies at the stores. I went in at 9 am and they only had three copies left.

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask or not, but I'm looking to upgrade to a new TV within 3-6months. Definitely going LED but possibly looking into 3D as well. I've heard a lot of feedback on passive vs active 3D...are both still pretty much around or is one becoming the norm? Passive 3D is like the 3D glasses from movie theaters...right?

Yes, the passive 3D glasses are the same as movie theater glasses.

I can't say whether passive is becoming the norm or not, but I have read plenty of people who prefer it to active (which is what I have; and I like it).

Luckily, they are giving rainchecks. I meant to go out this morning and pick one up, but didn't make it until tonight and the nearest with them in stock is 20 miles away. Guy offered me a raincheck and I gladly accepted it.

Both are still around. Both are comparable, but I still feel that active 3d has the edge in picture quality. Also if you are a gamer only the active 3d can do the simulview. If you have the money you could get a passive 3d 4K display and the 3d picture will still be 1080p which is the same that active can output.

One thing to keep in mind about LED sets. Most of them are LED edge-lit sets, which replaced the CCFL lighting assembly with LEDs.

Once you get up into the upper models of some vendors (Samsung E9000, if I remember correctly as one), you have it go to LED backlighting which lights up the LCD display from the back and not the edge. You get better color display, better black levels and brighter display with a LED backlit set. They're always the top-tier of LCD TV vendors' sets and carry a price to match. LG 55LM9600, Sony HX929 and HX950 are the only ones I can think of off-hand, though they're in the $3K and up ranges.

I have a backlit 2D set with my LG 55LE8500, and it's a damned good set, though it wasn't cheap. Well worth it to me, though.

Thanks for the tip guys, don't have a big budget, hoping to spend under $800 for a 42" set...which might not allow me to get 3D but if I can get it around there or for a little more I'd definitely consider it.

I currently have a SHARP 42" LCD and it outputs so much heat, I have it in a small room and you can definitely feel the warmth which is why I want to go LED...they are way cooler temp right?

As for backlit LED that sounds awesome, but beyond my budget for now

Definitely cooler. I had a 42" samsung plasma that heated my entire room, have a 55" 3D Sony LED and you can't feel anything.

You should really go to a brick and mortar store and try out both. Buying a new tv that you're going to have for a while, really should take a lot of research, with your eyes in person. The AVSForum is the best place to find info on tv's, btw. You can learn anything you want from there.

But definitely go to Best Buy or somewhere similar and try out the passive vs. active. Personally, my active setup on my Optoma looks twice as good as any dlp theater around me.
