The official "I Hate Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles" topic
First, I am not a hardcore FF fan. I can't see anyone being a hardcore FF fan. The fact is that the NES/SNES FF games, PS1/PS2 FF games and the new GCN game are very different. Numbered FF games (i.e. VII VIII X whatever) play out like most people conceive FF gameplay... you wander around or go to wherever your quest directs you to go and boom you get hit by a random battle. FF Tactics gameplay is very strategic.. turnbased battle system for your party, allowing you to move on the gameboard as well. Think Warhammer or something.. I dunno. Most of you have played FFT or FFTA sometime and get the gist of it. FF Crystal Chronicles is simply Gauntlet in a FF shell. You run around and fight shit in real time. Now to the point of this rant. I hate Gauntlet, so that certainly doesnt help, but I thought I would give it a shot when my friend bought FF:CC and a flame GBASP (quite spiffy I might add). The defend and attack system is really weak, you have to pull a trigger to switch between the two and I honestly thing that's just totally weak. The combat is better than Gauntlet... Square realizes that just whacking something until it dies isnt a good thing. Thats where defense comes in, which is virtually non existant because its takes so ing long for you to simply put your damn shield up. It's like, wait for attack to end, click left trigger, wait for Defense to show up, hold A. Too much. I mean couldn't they have assigned it to R trigger or X for single player or something? Shit!Anyways, I have to disagree with a certain post named "Final Fantasy Addicts Rejoice" as I would have to say it is more along the lines of Final Fantasy Fanboys and/or Gauntlet Addicts Rejoice. My 2c. |

Ever play Final Fantasy Mystic Quest? If not, then you dont realize that Final Fantasy games can take other turns from the original games (I never played the Gameboy ones but I think those are different-ish). Just enjoy the game for what it is. An incredibly well done and fun multiplayer Zelda combined with hack and slash fighting game.

So its bad Square decided to take a chance and produce something unique compared to the final fantasy drivel they've been pumping out for the last two years?
I hate Square. I'll gladly admit it, but Crystal Chronicles...I enjoy. Why? Because rather than insulting my intelligence with boring, generic storylines with uninteresting fan service characters...they decide to give me something I can play rather than watching hours and hours of in-game cinema sequences.

FF: MQ and the GB FF's (FFL's) are not technically "official" FF games, they were simply renamed as such in North America to convince FF lovers to buy them. The GB games were actually the first game in the SaGa series, which has now gone through several iterations on various systems (Romancing, Frontier, Unlimited).

Also, the GB title FFA was actually the original Seiken Densetsu, the second game of which series is known as Secret of Mana in North America. This game, of course, was recently re-made as Sword of Mana for GBA.

In that context Chronciles is fun, from personal experience I've witnessed this. Was it the best decision for Square to take? Perhaps not. Was it bold and inventive? Yes. I wouldn't recommend they do it again, but I'm glad they tried. I think the majority of negative reviews this game is getting is from a bunch of bellyachers who are resistant to change and the divergent path FF has taken. My favorte FF games are the old ones, and I feel their pain, but I refuse to shoot down a sustainable franchize simply because it tried to evolve, albeit with some caveat's to traditional fun. Keep churning out the same thing, and an eventual lapse in interest *will* occur. |

Does anyone have any idea how well this game is selling so far? I am really curious to know so if anyone has any info, please post. EDIT-Looks like it is selling very well. It is number 1 at amazon.com and on both eb and gamestop's best selling list. |

Ok, I am too lazy to read all these posts. I just want to say that FFCC kicks ass. The game is very fun, graphics are beautiful. Playing with the GBA-SP is fantastic.
The only part I don't like is going to towns since everyone want to go their own way. I wish that could have been split screen or viewed on the GBA. |
