PRESS RELEASE

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (November 6, 2006) – SEGA® Europe Ltd, SEGA® of America Inc. and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL) announced today that they have entered into a worldwide agreement whereby SEGA has secured the exclusive rights to develop and distribute video game titles for all platforms based on Marvel’s renowned Iron Man property. Under the multi-year agreement, SEGA has been granted the exclusive interactive rights to develop and distribute games based on both Marvel‘s Iron Man films and the classic comic book iterations of the character. The Iron Man agreement represents the first step in a strategic partnership between Marvel and SEGA to bring at least one additional Marvel Super Hero property to next-gen platforms.

The first Iron Man project produced under the license agreement will be based on Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated Iron Man feature film starring Academy Award® Nominees Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard, and directed by Jon Favreau. This project, the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, will blast into theaters May 2, 2008.

“Marvel is recognised as one of the world’s leaders in the entertainment industry and SEGA is excited to be publishing the next-gen interactive entertainment based on Iron Man, the first Marvel Studios project being brought to the widescreen,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. “The Iron Man history is filled with compelling and intriguing characters and stories, and with the power of the next-gen systems, SEGA will be bringing these characters to life like never before.”

David Maisel, Executive Vice President, Office of the Chief Executive of Marvel Entertainment, added, “SEGA is an excellent partner to bring our Iron Man franchise to the next generation consoles. SEGA is a powerful force in the video game space and has always been on the cutting edge of the industry. We are very excited to be bringing Iron Man to theaters in 2008 and to team with a great partner to simultaneously introduce Iron Man to the video game world.”

SEGA tends to make great games, so I'm glad that they aquired the rights to this license. Here's hoping for an awesome Iron Man game.

Sega hasn't made a great game in years.

I fully expect Iron Man to suck ass.

Maybe if this was the Sega from a few generations ago.

This could be amazing or horrible. Probably horrible though. Sega has been slacking.

If you throw enough crap at the walls, eventually something sticks.

Iron Man will be the crap that slides off the wall and leaves a horrible mess, though.

Should have just given the license to Activision.

The GBA Iron Man was simple but a lot of fun. I'm hoping this will be good but to be honest I'm not expecting much.

Phantasy Star Universe is also pretty good.

I am sure they will be better than Activision with Fantastic 4 or X-Men: The Official Game

I was talking about Sega with some gamer friends, and it took me a while to remember that Condemned was from Sega, and it was awesome.

Hey, it's a Marvel game based on a film that's not in the Spider-Man series. You do the math there.

Although...hearing Robert Downey Jr.'s voice in a videogame would be pretty surreal. "Yeah, well, that's what rentals are for, huh-huh." Right. Reading this just reminded me that no matter how crappy the game ends up being, this should be a pretty damned solid--if not rocking--film. And that's really all I'll care about a year-and-a-half from now.

The thing about Sega is that even their failures are usually interesting, which is more than can be said for most publishers/developers. I'd much rather see them give it a shot than someone I know will produce a cheap cash-in. Will it fail? Probably, but at least it might be an interesting take.

what was the last sega game that involved a hero who shot beams out of his hands? Oh yeah... Astro Boy. Not good. Not good at all. (I did love the GBA one though)

While some of those range from ok to good, none are universally considered great.

I love Iron Man... he was my favorite when I was young. But I'm not looking forward to this, Sega makes 10 bad games for every good one.

Robert Downey Jr. has been taking Wing Chun at a studio I go to for years now, and is getting some intensive one-on-one training from the head Sifu there. In that sense, I have faith in the project.

I gotta say Iron Man is my favorite character in Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Condemned was developed by Monolith though... not by Sega.

I think it's good that Marvel is at least spreading around the licenses to different publishers instead of giving Activision all of the rights. Activision did a great job on both Spider-Man and the X-Men Legends/M:UA games (thanks to Raven), but X2:Wolverine's Revenge, X3, and Fantastic Four weren't so good.

I thought these games turned out pretty good:
Punisher - THQ
Hulk - VU Games

Seems like Marvel's trying different developers. They licensed the rights to the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie to Take 2.

Is any game really, ever universally considered great? There's a thread around here right now with people talking about how they don't like Ocarina of Time, a game that tops many "best game ever" lists.

From the list, I've heard far fewer complains about Sonic Rush than I have heard glowing things (and personally, though it is slightly flawed, think it's a great game).

Sega has had a tremendous downfall though. I was a huge Sega nut back in the day. Others swore by their Super Nintendos; I had a Genesis and it rocked. But they're really spiraling out of control here. Many of their DS offerings are good (I've yet to try Rub Rabbits), but I do hope they fix their glitches and get on the right track. Although, from what I've seen and heard re: the 360/PS3 Sonic game, I guess I'm not holding my breath.

I'll be interested to see if they use Iron Man as just a generic game cash-in, or really do something unique with it (ala, Activison's Spiderman 2).
