PS3 HDMI Problems & PS3

LATEST UPDATE: Problem fixed with one of the firmware updates.

UPDATE 2: Uh, oh.

Unfortunately, when you do the auto-setup for HDMI listed below, it switches both video and audio (and tells you it's doing so) to HDMI.
Changing the audio settings to optical out from HDMI will negate the auto-setup that was performed, making it not possible to run HDMI video and make use of the optical audio out.

Since I am relying on the auto-setup for HDMI (like I do), this is a pretty big issue, as I can't run Dolby Digital now.

UPDATE: A fix!!!!

Ive learned that there is a auto HDMI setup built into the PS3. They say to do the following:

Turn on TV and set input to HDMI port being used
Make sure PS3 is connected via HDMI
Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds. It should automagically configure your PS3 to the TV's native res for all settings.
--------------------------------------------------

.

I've got the PS3 connected (via HDMI) to a Panasonic 42" plasma, model number TH-42PX500 (Japanese TV).
The PS3 is set to output to 720p, which my TV can handle.

Everything is fine until I launch a PS3 game. Once I do that, after the "Playstation 3" logo appears, the screen goes black. The game is loading fine, I just cant see it.

The only way I can regain control of my TV at this point is to tune into the regular TV channels using my TV remote. Only then I can use the input selection button to get back to HDMI. Once I do this, I can see and play the game.

My guess is that the PS3 is sending some kind of signal through the HDMI cable that is making the TV unhappy. The strange thing is, I tried a PS1 game and it worked fine.

Any ideas?
Just for fun, I tried 1080i and seems the PS3 treats it the same as 420i. It looked terrible.

Methinks we are going to see a lot of PS3 updates in the near future.

Not trying to be rude, but Obviously the PS3 is trying to link up with SkyNet.

Probably a stupid question, but have you tried playing with the composite cables?

Your PS3 is defective. Promptly send it to me for service and I'll see what I can do to fix it.

When the PS3 is plugged in and turned on do you get a picture? If so it could be like when you try to display an invalid resolution on a monitor and it goes dark until the default resolution is set. Since I have no PS3 to examine, and this may be impossible or you may have already tried it or it could be just a dumb suggestion, but maybe you have to set up the resolution on the PS3 (through an options menu on the PS3(if that even exists)) and also on your TV. Also it could have something to do with progressive scan not initiating when the game starts. Again I know nothing about the PS3 in terms of how to set it up and if none of this makes sense feel free to flame away.

Maybe you guys have some ideas. If not, I'll repost this on the AVS Forum.

My guess is that the PS3 is sending some kind of signal through the HDMI cable that is making the TV unhappy. I can't even use the usual input selection on the remote to regain control of the TV. I have to tune into the regular TV channels to get the TV to respond and then I can use the input selection button to get back to HDMI.

Once I do this, all is well.

Any ideas?

Does your TV support HDMI 1.3? If it is 1.1, then it might not work right.

Do you have a component cable and component input on your TV to test that functionality?

Earlier, it was mentioned that the 1.3 spec in the PS3 includes expanded audio support that may introduce greater noise into TVs that don't support it.

I dunno, I'd try using the component ports and just pipe the audio via TOS link to your HT, if that's possible.

Hmmm. That sounds odd. I have no idea what your problem might be, but on the NCSX PS3 page, they have a link telling buyers to download a update for a new firmware.

http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/CECH-A00.html

Firmware Update
NCS Customers: Please update your Japanese PS3 firmware with v1.10 upon arrival of the console. The download is linked below and is a little under 100MB:
http://djp01.ps3.update.playstation....b/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Maybe that might help.

Did you try allowing the system to automatically detect the best resolution for you?

If you can make it through the broken English, it sounds like someone else was having a similar problem.

ok here with new info i discovered!

first of all. if you have a hdtv monitor that can handle 1080p. here is a tip.

you need first to connect the analog cables that come with the ps3 and the hdmi cable to the minotor. when you start up your ps3 make sure that in system settings you change to hdmi.

then change the setting on the benq monitor to hdmi. only this way it works.

somehow the monitors dont automaticly understand the hdmi signal and it wont work. this left me with big problems. because now my ps3 monitor has hdmi as signal. and i cant get it back to 480i again on my other monitor.

also i tried with different cables from hdmi to dvi doesnt work. i also tried setting 1080i. still not work.

also i updated to firmware 1.10 and loadtimes still same. nothing imporved for me on kingdom of heaven.

i cant try yet 8 below and corpse bride on the ps3 yet. because i gave them to my friend to watch. i will get them back tommorow or monday.

also in the ps3 you cant change settings to 1080p 24 frames a second or 1080p 60 hz. so we can asume for this moment that it only does 1080p 60hz. you can only select 1080p.

anyway today i had very little time to check out on the plasma tv with samsung bluray player. and compare that to ps3 as bluray player. but i will do that tommorow.

now me is going home dead tired and getting some sleep.
Edit: Read through this thread, you may be able to find your solution there: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2&page=1&pp=30

Thanks for the suggestions.
I've tried them all (except using cables other than HDMI) to no avail. I don't know what version HDMI my TV has...I bought it exactly 1 year ago.

I'm pretty sure that my model is a very popular TV here in Japan...I'm wondering if others are having the same issue.

I guess if you currently have Ps2 component cables you can use those to try it, but sorry cheapy I know that sucks your having that problem. I'm sure others are having issues.

Try playing a dvd, or blue ray movie.. just to see what works and doesn't work. Oh yeah, you're not trying to play a US game are you, cause that might cause a problem due to the regional lock out.

Here we go again... No more launch systems for me. This is going to make an even bigger, shinier brick than the 360.

Good luck Cheapy.

Cheapy, I think HDMI cables are "forwards compatible" meaning if you have a 1.1 HDMI connection it should still work with a 1.3 cable or whatever. I'm sure you tried this already but maybe playing with the settings in the XMB will help. Is there a physical switch on the back of the PS3 to enable the HDMI port? I feel bad - this would piss me off to no end if I couldn't get my new $600 PS3 to work.

Quick question - Is your plasma hanging on the wall? Mine is and to access the HDMI cable I think I have to take it down and that makes me very very nervous.
