Anyone know of a good free or cheap DVD ripping program? I'd like it to be as simple and straightforward as possible. I currently use VLC player to watch video on my computer, so codecs shouldn't be a problem.

I'd like to avoid having to use multiple programs. Thanks!

Thanks guys, that program works great. One more question - is there a program that will turn those ripped files into a nice, easy AVI or some other one-file video format?

There is an easier way to do it that I used to use but I can't remember it now. It pretty much had all the programs bundled, you clicked a single button and waited till it finished processing it and you had yourself an .avi file

edit: You might also try this but I have no clue if it comes bundled with anything negative http://www.qweas.com/download/video_dvd/dvd_rippers/1click_dvd_ripper.htm
Of course most programs for backing stuff up don't but I claim no responsibility

Thank you for all your awesome suggestions. I'm using a combo of DVDShrink and Handbrake, and its working great.

You guys are the best, thanks for helping me out.

One would only think that before seeing this.

Also, you need a dvd to back it up. Thus it's either stolen, rented, or bought. Rentals require buying a copy of said rental. So as long as it's not stolen it helps out the people somehow.

He just wants to rip his dvd's to avi files to use on a media player, etc.
I did this with the Jericho first season, which fits on a single DL disc, and I can play on my portable Philips Divx/DVD player. Beats the hell out of taking original discs on a trip to be stolen and/or scratched.

It's ironic how people jump to the piracy conclusion so fast around here, but the same people go through the most convoluted, byzantine schemes to defraud retailers, ultimately costing us all more money.

I like the Imtoo ripper, but it's $29. You can try it for free.

seems there are some newer movies you cant rip.

Check out DVDFab. You can choose to burn to a disc, transfer to an Ipod, transfer to a PSP, etc. It is very user friendly.
