Anyone else feel Pikmin is overrated?
My biggest problem with it is that you can't move the camera anywhere on the map and control pikmin in various locations at once, ala starcraft. For a game that encourages multi-tasking it's rather troublsesome to have to move olimar back and forth between groups of pikmin. It would also be nice if you could sort your armies easier than dismissing them in groups and then recruiting them again. Like if there was a button to scroll through the different types of pikmin at your disposal, so you only throw the color you want. Also, challenge mode is bullshit. I can't stand games where the entire goal is to beat your own score. For me getitng a high score should have some reward attatched to it like bonus levels, unlockable characters, or weapon upgrades. It's not a terrible game, but just very overrated. The sequel looks like it'll be a lot better with randomly generated environments and more types of enemies and pikmin, and being able to switch between olimar and another character ala the lost vikings sounds like it'll add a lot to the gameplay. But the first Pikmin just feels overly simplistic and difficult to control more than anything. Don't take it form me though, if you haven't played it you might as well rent it just to see what it's like and it's not much of a stretch to beat the game in a few days anyhow. 7/10 (on a side note, one of the biggest complaints I hear about Pikmin is that the 30 day limit makes you feel rushed. As someone who was immensly bothered by the time system in Majora's Mask I was relieved that the time limit in Pikmin didn't bother me much at all. Mainly because if you make poor progress in a day you can just select not to save and try it over again, so it's basically just like dying in any other game and adds challenge.)

I just picked up Pikmin from this recent CC sale and I like it a lot. It's a little short, but was/is a fun game.
In the beginning, I didn't know what the hell I was doing, and ended up wasting a lot of days collecting no spaceship parts and Pikmin. The time limit really made me think about strategies on how to maximize my time so that I could catch up. The first time through, a time limit facilitates a bit of thinking. You should have an option of turning the time limit off the next playthrough so you can just do whatever you want. I give Pikmin an 8/10. |

Overrated? No.
It's getting the response it does now because it was so underrated when it came out. It's just popular opinion correcting itself. Of course, at some point people will likely push it to a point where it is overrated, and then there will likely be a correction in the other direction. |

I think it gets the credit it deserves. It's an enjoyable game with possible flaws depending on the player but overall it's a real good game. It's not the greatest game ever made, but it's certainly better than average.
Edit: Forgot to add "not" between the words "It's" and "the." I felt kinda stupid. |

I give the game kudos for originality. Sure, it has a few problems here and there, but nothing unbearable that can't be overlooked. I got the game at launch and am not disappointed at paying $50 for it.

It's a good $20 game.. but it's IMO the most over-rated game this generation. It's "highly creative", "very influential", "completely different"... bullshit bullshit bullshit. It's RTS with a slightly different character creation system. Oh, and its got weird looking colorful units.. yay.
I think it's got Miyamoto's mark on it, and that's a big chunk of why it's "so extremely different and creative". Again.. bullshit. The game is fun, but not anywhere close to what people make it out to be. |

I would have to agree that Pikmin is overrated, much like Windwaker, Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, Smash Brothers and basically every other game that Nintendo's had something to do with since the launch of the Gamecube.

Pikmin just didn't engage me to well...but Animal Crossing had me hooked for 3 months or so just running around catching bugs and trying to unlock all those NES games..

I thought pikmin was great, very different and original. Breaking it down into oh its just another RTS isn't really giving it a fair shot. From the time limit, to the way you control pikmin, to the different pikmin abilities, to harvesting your enemies to create more units, it's a pretty unique game.
