Forgot to add, surge protectors also do not always block surges, even if they still have protection left in them. So unplug your PC, TV, game systems when there is a storm and definitely don't use them during a storm. Just putting all that out there for everyone.

I think it also says not to use a surge protector in the PS3 manual. I remember reading that because I have a heavy duty-protector (for a treadmill) that I am not using.

Just read that: Don't have a lot of electronic devices connected to 1 surge and many surge protectors will insure you for your items if they were damaged while plugged into the surge! I remember when I bought my last surge it had this.

Now even though Sony says not to use a surge, I don't think I'd listen to that unless the PS3 has it's own surge that works very well. It does not seem that using another surge does any damage so I would still use another surge. I've heard of people's PS3's being destroyed due to surges. Maybe the game companies even say not to use a surge so they can get more people who need repairs.

Considerations
Both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii support sites suggest that you not use a surge protector with those consoles. Sony recommends only that you use a polarized three-prong outlet that is properly grounded for your PS3.

So I reconnected my PS3 yesterday with component cables and optical for audio. Everything seems fine and working normal again. The only issue is that Blu-Ray max resolution is 1080i via component and you can not upscale DVDs via component cables. Not that big of a deal really and not a reason to buy another PS3 yet. I think I need a new laptop before I buy another PS3 because of a bad HDMI port.

Thanks for all you help and suggestions.

when you type in a text field like google search box and the PS3 suggests words you have used before on the right of the PS3 keyboard...like my email address for example from logging into it....is there a way to clear the list of words it remembers that you entered from showing up on the list ?

I was trying to figure this out for website searches & text inputs it automatically saves I did on PS3 for a long time because deleting the predictive dictionary did not do it. I finally realized I just needed to delete the history and/or cache from within the browser.

If I was selling my PS3 what would I need to do? I've google'd tons of stuff but couldn't really find an answer as to what information is actually stored on my PS3. I don't have a CC stored on there and I'm not sure if my address is on there. Basically what is kept on the PS3 and what do I need to make sure gets deleted? I read just to delete the User off and format it, is this it?

I have the same question as well. I read you have to deactivate your user name...do i have to do this? Also do I have to deactivate all of the software I downloaded so it does not count towards the 5 downloads and how would I go about doing this? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Another question, with the Slim models is there any difference in skus or are they all the same? I know there is a 120gb and a 250gb, but after that is there anything else i should be looking for when I purchase one?

This Youtube video walks you through the process for deactivating your account.

After you do this, I'd reformat the system AFTER you get everything you'd like to keep off of it and onto your new system. That way it should be clean.

Hey, so I'm looking to sell my 60GB and buy a slim model. I'm trying to use the backup utility, but it gives me an error before any progress can be made. I figured it was a space issue at first, but I now have a 6GB flash drive hooked up and it still gives me the problem, all that's on there are game saves so I doubt space is the issue.

Anyways, my second idea was to manually copy over each and every game save on there (at least those that can be copied) since that doesn't seem to cause any problems... is this basically the same thing the backup utility will do? When I sign in on my new PS3 will I just be able to copy these over? Is there anything else I need to copy over?

Does anyone know why the audio for Uncharted shows up as PCM on my receiver and not Dolby Digital? The back of the box shows Dolby Digital and most games show up as such. I have my PS3 set to bitstream, and it does so for all DVDs and Blurays.

Sorry, it's actually named Delete Searches or something like that, not history or cache. If you look at one of the expandable choices on the menu when in the browser it will show it.

So over the past 8-12 months my 60GB launch model has been progressively louder and heats up my room like no other. Should I be worried?

I don't want to trade it into GS for that trade in deal because it has backwards compatibility and the memory card reader.

I just got a YLOD and im thinking about sending it back to Sony to get it fixed. What I'm wondering is if Sony will send be back the same ps3. I had a 500 gb hard drive in it with a lot of stuff on it and would like to recover some of the stuff. I know the hard drive is tied to the system so I wouldn't just be able to put it into a new ps3 so I would need the same ps3 to get access to the hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just noticed there's white flickering when I have my PS3 on with HDMI. I had left it on in my basement, got distracted and did something. When I came back, it was really bad. Took out the the HDMI and put it back in, it was a little better but still noticeable. Restarted now and it's still noticeable.

Any suggestions on what to do? I tried both my HDMI cables and it's the same.

Does it do it on component? Do you have an Xbox to try on HDMI, or a different TV to try it on?
