They're definitely cheap in the smaller sizes--especially if you're ok with the bargain brands. Which are certainly fine for high school and college budgets and living arrangements.

I bought a 67" LED DLP for $1830 in July 2008. I wouldn't call that expensive for a 67" set.

That is true. I ditched my Wii and PS2 shortly after getting an HDTV in part because they looked pretty bad with a few exceptions. Though the bigger reason was they just weren't getting touched as I was playing the 360 for all my gaming time and knew I'd never even get around to all the 360 games I'd like to play so I might as well unclutter the home theater and make a bit of cash.

If you had a 67" section of wall in need of repair, it would cost a major portion of $1830 to get it repaired. And what would you have to show for it besides a plain wall? That money didn't just buy a TV. It alleviated your home decorating concerns for a quite significant portion of the joint.

A bargain, I say.

DLPs are a great value (as are RPTVs). I recently sold a 56" DLP on Craigslist, with a stand, for $400. The guy that bought it sold his 32" LCD on Craigslist for $400 and upgraded to my DLP. Used CRTs are great values as well.

Expensive!? how the hell do you figure that? (OP)

I have a 28in. 1080p monitor and for what I paid I could probably easily get a 40in. 1080p tv these days.

HDTVs are crazy cheap. I got my 56" Samsung DLP for $1,100 brand new (over a year ago.) I'm sure it would be even cheaper now.

I remember back in the day spending almost $400 for a small 27" tube tv. The price of technology has dropped drastically.

Don't worry about it too much OP. Get one when you can afford it. For now, just go over to your friends' house and enjoy the lovely HD that they payed for.

I was actually going to buy an HDTV, until my notebook started to crap out on me. So I had to spend my HDTV money on a new computer. That's life I suppose. So I'll continue to do my gaming on my 32" Sansui tube.

I bought one last summer (probably an older model that what was out now). Picture was decent, but it made a loud buzzing when bright colors were on the screen. Had a vizio tech come look at it and he couldn't fix it and said that model tended to do that.

So I returned it, payed $200 more and got the 50" Sony LCD RPTV and haven't been happier. No problems, and the extra 10" is a huge difference.

If the new models don't buzz, then it's a good set for the price. When the tech took it apart I noticed that the screen and other parts had LG logos on them.

Personally, I probably won't take a chance on a budget brand again--unless it's just for the bedroom.

I have noticed that HDTV prices have dropped significantly since the beginning of 2008. These days, a 32-inch HDTV can be found for around the 500 dollar mark (which is cheap to me).

I got an LG 37" for $700 a little more than a month ago. Probably more than I should've paid, sure, but it was on sale, and we already had one LG that we loved, so I knew I'd be happy with it.

And I am. It's fantastic. I love it.

I have a 32" LCD that I got last year and I am interested in getting a DLP just like others have mentioned. Is there a general consensus as to which are great for the price?

I purchased a 42" Panasonic Plasma 720p HDTV for $520 a month or two ago.

I love it.

---

As far as DLP goes... I could just have a bad experience, but I would not recommend getting a DLP TV. My grandma has a 64" Mitsubishi DLP TV and I think it looks considerably worse than her other 32" Samsung LCD, or my Panny Plasma.

This could just be a crappy model, or brand though.

I got a 50" Sony LCD RPTV for $999.99 last summer, and I've seen a lot of good deals this fall. I could never go back to anything under 50"

My History is Sony 27" Wega back in 1999 or 2000 for $599.99 and then this 50" set for $999.99.

If you're a high school kid or something it's a lot of money. But still if you can find a part time job you have no rent, utility bills etc. to pay since you live at home so you can save up the money pretty quickly even on a low paying job.
Im 23 years old, almost 24, but live in Michigan, Unemployment is at the highest in the entire nation at 9.6 percent.
