PS3 won't output in high def with component cables!

To preface this, a year ago, my friend brought over his PS3 and it wouldn't display. I have a 5 year old 1080i RCA rear projection TV; no HDMI.

I bought a PS3 tonight. I also purchased some 3rd party component cables. However, I can only get the system to output with A/V cables in standard def. The component cables have inputs for the Wii and 360 as well. I tried the cables with the 360 and got a perfect HD signal, yet everything's black with the PS3.

What the hell is wrong? Why won't it output in 720p or 1080i? Would an HDMI to DVI adapter work?

What exactly happens when you try to set it to an HD resolution?

As for this, you might run into HDCP problems, though I'm not entirely sure.

When you had the component cables were plugged in, did you reset the video settings by holding down the power button for about 5 seconds until you hear a beep and the green light flashes?

Yeah this is a hidden thing that anytime you switch TV's and resolutions you will probably need to do.

Yes. When I do that, all I get is a black screen. Everything other than A/V cables results in a black screen.

Just wondering, did you by chance get the Madcatz component cables that have all three console inputs? If so, there's a switch somewhere on the cable where you can change it from standard def to high def.

I remember this being a known issue on older 1080i only TV's. If your TV doesn't support 720p, the PS3 downscales to 480p...time to upgrade your TV..

It'll still do 1080i in the XMB.

This

Does anyone know if an upscaling receiver fix that problem?

You do know that most games don't support 1080i so it'll downscale you automatically to 480p right?
