Not to mention WB made Blu-Ray.com take down their screencaps, and replace them with pre-approved images from WB.

Damage control boys and girls. They know their product is subpar.

Tons (and I mean TONS) of screen caps here. While I personally didn't plan on buying the theatrical cuts on Blu it is a bit of a letdown to see New Line/Warner blow this release. This also puts a bit of a worry about when the extended cuts get released on Blu if we are going to see the DNR work be done to that as well.

This example right here shows the ugly side of the Blu release. Gandalf's face looks like plastic on the Blu especially compared to the HDTV broadcast. Bleech.

As is often the case, The Digital Bits says the whole DNR issue is being blown out of proportion.

I'm torn. On the one hand, the DVDs just don't impress anymore, and according to all counts the blurays are better (if only just). Also, I don't own a ridiculously large screen, so I may not notice the problems anyway.

On the other hand, I know what a good transfer looks like, and these clearly aren't. I don't much care for the packaging either.

I think I'll wait. If nothing else they'll probably be released individually (I'd prefer seperate cases) and with any luck we'll get news of a re-mastering.

Which in turn is pretty typical of Bill Hunt. I guess he doesn't want to offend the studios who send him all those free copies to review on his blog.

Sadly I noticed the DNR on Gladiator on my meager 40 inch Samsung. Yeah some of the screen caps for the LOTR trilogy look semi decent which I'll give credit where its due. On the other hand semi decent shouldn't be the best thing I can say when it comes to LOTR. The PQ on the trilogy should be nothing short of fantastic as even if these are the theatrical cut they beg to be given the best presentation possible.

That's my stance and I'm sticking with it.

Yup. The double-dip is annoying, but I'm one of the few who prefers the theatrical cuts. There's no reason these should have been given a slapdash release (and there's no guarantee the EE's will be better).

My biggest complaint right now is the pisspoor packaging. 2 bluray cases, 6 discs in one, 3 in the other. Seriously, couldn't splurge on throwing in a third case for us WB? When you're making it blatantly obvious your going to force the fans into buying it all over again a year down the road, do you really need to be cheap assholes like that?

The plastic stickerbook isn't worth the plastic and paper it was made from. One of my worst purchases ever.

Why does BB.com say it is a 9 disc set? Is that just a typo or did something change?

3 Blu-Rays for the movies + 3 bonus DVD materials discs + 3 digital copy disc = 9 total.

Oh ok. I forgot about the digital copies. They ought to be nice for an iPad once I get one.

No. I'll show you why:

Each movie is two discs:
1 BD + 1 DVD

So it's:
Fellowship: 1 BD + 1 DVD
Two Towers: 1 BD + 1 DVD
King: 1 BD + 1 DVD
Digital Copies (3)

But WAIT!

Digital copies are Limited time only. So as soon as they stop pressing them, they don't include the nice outer box and sell just the 6 disc set in stores. If they split it up differently (1 BD + 1 DVD + 1DC) inside the current box, they would be selling them individually with 3 different SKUs and Warner HATES that. They always start with boxsets (see Matrix, Austin Powers, TMNT, Oceans etc.) because there is more money in it for them to get people to buy 3 movies instead of 1 or 2. I think the 6 disc set even has a SKU on it.

Warner

We got the trilogy in at work.. I got a chance to look at the box. It's in two cases. They're not even movie specific cases.. on the spine of the Blu-Ray cases, it just says "Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy".. which means that two movies are stuffed in there together. Which ones? Dunno, it's still sealed. I'll snap a picture of it tonight.

I took pictures a week or two ago:

1 case = the movies
1 case = digital copies

Oh, okay. Nevermind then. That's pretty terrible. I want cases for each individual movie.
