Wario Ware, Inc = Crack

Last night I hooked up my GameBoy Player into my Gamecube and broke out my brand new copy of Wario Ware, Inc MegaMicrogame$$$. I thought, "I'll just try it out for a few minutes and see what it's like before going back to Mario Kart."

Half an hour later my girlfriend came in to get something off of the couch, sat down and watched the game.

Three hours later I had to wrench the controller away from her as it was too late and we had to get up early the next day.

***

This is only a partial review, as I haven't even come close to beating the game, but my initial impressions are very favorable.

What it is: Wario likes money. He wants more money. He sees a reporter on TV talk about how much a certain video game sold, so he decides to make video games. He gathers up a bunch of genre specialists who also make games. You are, I guess, a tester who is playing these games for Wario. Or whatever. Each developer has their own personality, their own genre, and their own story.

For example: there is 9 volt, a little sci-fi looking kid who is also a DJ who mixes it up with the help of an enormous classic Gameboy. All of his games are classic NES games: scenes from Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario Bros., etc.

Or, there is Mona, who is a scooter driving employee at a gelato shop. All of her games are of the "weird" variety. You have to: catch toast; drop eyedrops; crack an egg into a moving frying pan; suck snot up into a nose; pick a nose; and so on.

Apparently, all of the Microgames are real. These were all games at one point in Japan, many of them produced by Nintendo. The mind boggles.

Here are some numbers, for those who like that kind of thing.

Gameplay 8/10. In most cases you just hit A, or use the control stick. Very easy to learn, very tough to master. Like someone else said before, Wario Ware takes standard games and boils them down to the one crucial moment, the one button click that will determine your fate.

Sound 9/10. I didn't know my GBA could sound so good. The game uses different genres of music for each of the different Game types you play. Brilliant.

Story 6/10. Is there a story? Are there a dozen stories? I can't tell yet, so I'm being conservative.

Replay Value 10/10. It's fun. It's weird. It's everything I loved about the Atari 2600, Colecovision, Activision, and the NES. It's a time traveller from your childhood showing up in your GBA today.

Overall 9/10. Does the math add up? I don't know. The game is great. Easy to learn, hard to play. And extremely charming.

If you have a GBA, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

It's definitely the most original game from Nintendo in a long, long time.

Wario Ware for the GameCube is even better with multiplayer modes :P

This game is what portable gaming should be. You can pick it up and play it anytime in small bits while on the go. While I like the classic games that nintendo has ported over, they need to release more games like this.

Ditto. Great game. I've got everything unlocked except for the very final hidden game.

Speaking of WW, it underwent a temporary price drop at target today - grounhog day (2/2) for $19.99. So those interested in the crack can pick it up for $10 off......

The game is just bizzare, really it is.

If you want another great, addictive game you can play in very brief intervals (or long ones), check out Ninja Five-0. It's easily one of the best (perhaps THE best) action game for GBA.

Also, Fire Emblem may be the best and most addictive GBA game yet. Holy shit, I can't stop playing it.

Just wait for the upcoming Wario Inc. gamecube version. I'm assuming it will definetly be a party game. Imagine yourself and 3 of your buddies doing those quickie games...I would do something to confuse everybody and have 4 different mini-games in each screen...I don't know...but I cannot wait for it, fantastic game.

One of the multiplayer modes (disco mode), works kinda like that. In pretty much all of the modes though, you can mess other people up by distracting them, limiting their view etc. It's a blast, one of the best party games. :P

ALL games are pointless. Couldn't we be doing something much more productive than rescuing the princess?

I declare your post worthless.

This game is great. You can also unlock 2 player modes which you can play while snuggling close to your gf.

Wario Ware is a great game. I'm all for quirky games (few of my friends can understand my appreciation for Incredible Crisis, Evil Zone, Rising Zan, Mister Mosquito, etc., much less respect my liking to them), so when I finally heard about this game, I had to but it.

I have to applaud Nintendo; it's easily the most original game they've yet concieved for the GBA. It's a game that can be played for hours on end, or for two minutes, and you'll still feel fulfilled either way.

Technically, the game is very impressive. Oh, sure, many of the graphics are simple, but if you think about it, the game does a lot of interesting things very well: Sprite rotation, (brief) emulation, rendering, etc. The music is quirky fun, too.

Sure, its got downsides; many of the minigames feel like mere "re-paints" of each other, and the first set of Wario games get rehashed throughout the game. However, it's hard to knock the game; so much to play, so much to do.

Definitely a top-rate game. Plus, it's gotten me hooked to the clunky puzzler that is Dr. Mario, so I might just have to hunt down a copy of the game somewhere.

I'd give it a 9.5/10.

Haha, I've actually considered doing that m'self. My girlfriend complains about such things, maybe I ought to give it a try? \/

Of course, she doesn't like games that much, but...eh, it's worth a go.
