Doesn't even have to have a web browser, just needs to connect online with games. DS Lite was perfect for this. The handhelds that are out now (3DS and Vita) have almost unusable web browsers. On the iPod touch everything has an app, so you don't really need to use the actual web browser that much, even though when you have to, it does work. I would definitely be happy with an iPhone sized portable that had even a d-pad and 2 face buttons. For the cost of the current portables, Sony and Nintendo haven't convinced me yet. These handhelds just don't have the support of apple's App store, and they cost the same as an iPod touch, Sony's portable costs more than the 32GB touch if you add in the memory card (especially the 32GB one), making my 32GB touch look like a fantastic value.
The major advantage of the DS is long battery life, and for $99, its definitely affordable alongside an iPod touch, especially if you are going to be staying in one place for a long time without access to an outlet. A big fault of the iPod touch/iPhone is that the battery life absolutely sucks on them, you might only get 1 1/2 or 2 hours of gameplay before it dies, and if its an iPhone, that leaves you nothing to use the phone features with.. But any more than $99, and they are not convincing me, especially since the game libraries for both the 3DS and the Vita are abysmal, for me personally at least and if I want portable games with buttons, I already have a DS.
There are games that equal the DS's games on the iPod touch, heck some of the games are even the exact same games, stuff like phoenix wright and ghost trick. RPG's play well with the touch screen too, since instead of mashing the A button you just mash the screen. I just got 2 RPG's by kemco I think it is that are easily equal to RPG's on the DS and they were .99 each.
