I dunno, I haven't had much of a problem aiming arrows and drawing boxes in Trine with my controller. Sure, it's a little slower, but it hasn't really affected my gameplay too negatively. I remember when I first bought Trine, I started out using my KB/M and after a while, I was like eh this, and switched to a controller. I was a lot more comfortable that way. But ah... to each their own, eh?

Trine 1 & 2 are both on PS3 so it's not like it's inconceivable to play them with a controller.

Wow. Digital: A Love Story was quite good and will probably stick with me for awhile. I hope Analogue is half as good whenever I pick it up.
Old 09-10-2012, 10:55 PM   #2584
There's less love in Analogue but you'll like it. Also try don't take it personally babe.

Actually, Digital felt a bit TOO formulaic for me. I liked it but I couldn't feel anything for the character you were supposed to like.

I find the platforming to be easier with a controller in Trine 2. Yes, the aiming is better with a mouse.. but it's not "horrible". I aimed fine with my 360 and PS3 controller, and I played through the game twice (on PS3 and PC). The game doesn't require anywhere near the accuracy of a mouse, but I agree it can help.

That's more preference than anything. The 360 controller's d-pad is a bigger disadvantage IMO. It's not just fighting games you'd need a good d-pad in, but platformers as well. Try playing either of the Ys games and you'll see how much better the reaction time is with a better d-pad.

I don't know what advantages 360 gamepads have, other than a better layout (which is preference) and maybe tighter analogue sticks (again preference?)

Out of town and catching up a little. Blood Money is definitely the best of the Hitman collection and I didn't see it mentioned, but it's part of Square Enix's streaming game service beta. It's free but there are occasional ads during your play session. Obviously a copy on your hard drive is superior, but anyone who just wants to better demo the game, revisit a level or two without buying again, or is waiting for the new game to be part of the collection may find it useful. I tried it out for 10 minutes last week and it seemed to work pretty well.

I think it would be great if Valve integrated controller support to every game without native support already included. However unlikely, it would please me very much.

Downloading that right now. I seem to remember RPS having a bunch of articles about that game which all said to ignore the art style.

About Digital, it's the first VN I've played (is that the right term) and the unique style of storytelling blew me away. I'm looking forward to don't take it personally babe now.

I'd love that, too. I realize it likely wont happen but it would be really nice to always have the option.

It's all just preference really. To me the 360 one just feels right across the board, whereas the ps controller, essentially unchanged for over a decade, has things I just don't care for. I'll list them here, and again, just my opinion.

1. Too small. I have maybe average size hands, maybe even smaller, and the controller still doesn't fit comfortably for me.

2. Orientation of shoulder buttons. I find it tough to get the right button in quick reaction situations, almost always catching the wrong one. This is one where over time I'm sure I would adjust, but having to adjust over time generally means unintuitive design.

3. Analog sticks are too close to each other. If my thumbs are positioned too far inside on the analogs, I actually run the risk of my thumbs getting in the way of each other. I also find it more difficult to go up to the arrows quickly than coming down to the d pad.

The controller is definitely usable, I just find the 360 works for me better in comfort and usability.

Most VNs have a more traditional style story-telling. Think Phoenix Wright only written by Kojima (So unedited streams of pointless words) only without Kojima's clumsy yet energetic attempts at themes and without any of the puzzles or player interaction of a normal game.

999 is a great example of one that actually has gameplay (But sparse enough to be a VN. PW is way too busy to be a VN.) AND has pretty brisk writing. The ending sucked but it did the job up to then.

For Digital, the author's unique nerdiness gave her a damn neat idea for Digital which she expanded upon in Analogue for pacing the gameplay JUST different enough to keep the player engaged even when there is really only one puzzle to be had.

don't take it personally is a SLIGHTLY more traditional style VN, with the added social networking stuff providing a similar pace-change as the email hopping of Digital, but less constant. There are more actual choices in don't take it personally but they are pretty pointless. There's no failure or game over so I recommend you pick any "cool" choice.

Now, bigger VNs have choices which lead to different routes and the like but it's not an intuitive thing that challenges the player, more of just route mapping.

I love gamepads so I use them as much as possible. Needless to say, I really like Big Picture!

This Big Picture mode could not have come at a better time. Tomorrow I am going to meet up with the surgeon to find out when I get my gallbladder removed and I'll be stuck on bed duty for a little bit after that, this is perfect. Though my PS3 is crying because it thought it was going to get some quality time lol.

Likewise. Every now and then I wonder why I ever stopped using it. Then I remember that it used the "game port" that used to be part of sound cards...

And it's called a typo, I know your limited brain probably can't comprehend the fact that someone can know the difference, but in a hurry, still type the wrong thing, what with you still using M$ like a 12 year old.
Really? You bothered to respond with this? Man, you would have been better off saying nothing and accepting it.

We expect better from our CAG disputes!

Marry me.

Also, "you're" vs. "your" is not a typo; at best, brainfart. But yeah, weak comeback—aside from the post in question actually being well-expressed.

Finally, why is my Steam all bubbly now? I expected hisses and clanks.

Thanks for posting that! Might have to work it into the OP.

BTW, I've requested a cleanup as I don't like that little argument from last page one bit. This is a happy place, not a be-nasty-to-each-other one.

Wow. Thanks for that! That makes a difference (and a primary reason I typically favored using a real browser for the steam store).

I need some more Steam friends who play Iron Brigade. Did anyone else pick it up? If so (and you want to actually play it), send me a PM with your Steam ID and let's be pals.
