Had the same but restarting Steam fixes it.

Which is why I prefer to avoid FPS's that rely heavily on AI companions. Like Homefront does. I didn't find the implausibility of the plot to be a detriment so much as the shallowness of it.

I got it because someone else raved about the setting and environment. It was good and had its moments (like making your way through a blasted out White Castle) but they never did much with it. The most unique environments were the suburban ones and you were either getting rushed through by your companions (and game mechanics like the never-ending waves of enemy soldiers unless you moved forward) or removed completely for more mundane environments (look, a farm! And a helicopter shootout over a highway!) Given that the setting is the best thing I can say for it, that's hardly a check in the plus column.

Maybe all that stuff happens all the time in the MP/SP sphere -- I generally play FPS's designed to be SP experiences. And I'll be the first to admit that games like Homefront are probably designed more around the MP with the SP tacked on just because it's expected. But it sure wasn't very good.

Sure, it's not the bestest shooter ever, but it is fun enough and you get about 6 hours of gameplay in single player for your $5.
A complete story experience in 6 hours actually increases the appeal for me.

Super Crate Box on steam! Is there anything to pay for? Maybe steam workshop?

I definitely agree they could have done more with the setting/enviroment. Much like you, I found certain scenes really fun (the opening chapter, the football stadium, the church and escape.) The helicopter/highway, and suberbia chapters were my least favorite. Infinite spawning AI are definitely something I can't stand in FPS's (I'm looking at you again, WaW,) but there was only a couple places I felt that that bogged you down. I much prefer strategizing over rushing through.

I definitely see some potential in it, which is why I am actually hoping they do a good job with the sequel. If they can address some of the problems we have both mentioned I could see this being a really interesting series, story-wise.

I also agree about the mulitplayer, and I think that's why it was so criticized. More was expected from it, yet the single player ended up being better (IMO). If they focussed more on the SP, maybe it would have corrected alot of the mistakes.

To be clear, I'm not saying Homefront is a great game, or can't miss game. I do think it's a decent-to-good game though, and one that's worth $5 - not $40. If your backlog is huge, or you're sick of shooters, don't bother.

Thanks. Worked for me as well.

I enjoyed the SP and MP portions of Homefront. I think a lot of people "heard" that it was a bad game and then passed that info on without finding out firsthand.

While you might complete the story in 6 hours (took me 3 actually), I would hesitate to call it a complete story experience since it has no real beginning or ending, just a lot "Throw a grenade!" and "Run! Run! Run!" over and over and over. The squad AI is some of the worst I have ever seen, and it only comes off favorable when compared to Treyarch's COD games, which are some of my least favorite shooters of all time.

I will spoiler this bit where I complain about the story, but I don't think it will spoil all that much because I don't think the story matters whatsoever, though I will spoil it like crazy if you care.

The story goes, you are a pilot, so the rebels want you. So they go get you, getting themselves mostly wiped out in the process. Then there is a bunch of running around neighborhoods in scenes that were mostly repeats of MW2. Then there is a big scene in a tigerdirect parking lot. Do they have retail stores? Whatever, it doesn't matter because everyone is on fire now. Cue lots of yelling. Then you find out that you need to get gas and bring it to San Francisco. They needed you so you can cover the convoy of gas trucks all the way from Colorado. So you tag the trucks and then you steal them and then you escort them all the way to California. Then it is like, okay, here is your gas, and the game ends. You never even get to talk to the girl you just partnered up with while slaughtering hundreds of people across the land. And I know that people wanted that, because half of the screenshots in the game's hub on Steam are of her rear with captions like "Dat ass!"

But it is probably only the second worst modern military shooter I have played, so it has that going for it.

I haven't played it, but by watching it, it doesn't look anything like Counterstrike. If anything, it looks almost identical to Call of Duty.

FWIW - The campaign for Homefront was half decent - as mentioned before, AI is rather dumb, but I kind of liked the story (yeah, I know, I'm a sucker for outlandish crap).

Not sure if MP community is still active, but I sunk 15-20 hours into it and enjoyed it. I got sidetracked with other games and stopped, but I can say it's worth the $5 if you're on the fence.

To anyone still on the fence about grabbing spec ops from Amazons deal. You should do it. The story alone is worth picking the game up.
Old 08-29-2012, 07:54 PM   #1691
I thought the gameplay in Spec Ops was one of the first TPS's I have played in a while to boot

Does anyone think that spec ops could drop to ~$10-15 by the steam winter sale?

Absolutely. It's not a huge seller and 2k Games has been pretty good about discounting games to 75% off. I'd be surprised if the regular price doesn't drop by then. $10-$15 by the Winter Sale seems very possible.

Agreed.

Played the demo and it was tons of fun, but I'll wait for a sub $10 before I bite. (huge backlog and all - I know, shocking ain't it)

When Yahtzee gave Spec Ops a good review, praising the story especially, it went on my "buy it when it gets under $10" list. If I didn't already have the Bioshock games, I may've bitten. With the backlog, I can wait.

It looks like I'll be holding out until the Winter Sale comes along. The Amazon price for the bundle is unexpectedly good, but, sadly, I already own Bioshock. (I still need to complete it, as well.)

Man, it didn't take us long to set our sights on the next major Steam sale.

Isn't that how it normally works? If its after the winter sale everyone talks about the summer one. If its after the summer one, everyone can't wait til the winter one. Steam is not about games, its about sales.

This is gaben's plan all along. He doesn't care if you played 1,000 hours worth of games or 10, as long as your buying them, he makes money. When he puts them on sale, he makes more money.

So everyone wins, except our backlogs .

I just wanted to highlight this since Super Crate Box is, indeed, free on Steam.

So can anyone recommend any of those absurdly cheap paradox games? Never really paid them any mind.
