Summary:
  • PS4 will most likely be named PlayStation Orbis.
  • Utilizes AMD's A10 APU series
  • Goal for PS4 is to achieve 1080p 60FPS games in 3D with no problem while maintaining an affordable price point.
  • Dev kits have 8GB to 16GB of ram.
  • 256GB HD or possibly SSD standard with Blu-ray drive.
  • Orbis's input/output are the same as PS3. Wifi, HDMI, etc...
  • Orbis will always be in standby mode to receive background system/game updates.
  • Official announcement to be done before E3.
Sony ditching Cell means Orbis will most likely not be backwards compatible without hardware or software emulation.

P.S. The PS3 received an unannounced firmware update (4.31).

I really hope they redesign the controller, it's been the same shape/design since PS one. My developing arthritis needs a controller for adult HUMAN hands.

Otherwise, sounds good so far. Let's finally get rid of jaggies next generation!!!

I'm not feeling the name Orbis. I know it probably won't be PS4 since the Japanese consider the number 4 to be very unlucky, but I'm not liking Orbis at all and I hope its not the final name.

Thinking Orbis is just the codename Sony is using. Just like Wii U was Project Cafe. Orbis just sounds lame. "Hey guys wanna come over and play with my Orbis?"

While I wouldn't be opposed to a new controller, I would love it if they actually let you use Dualshock 3s with the next console. People can still buy "the cool new thing", but we also get the option to use our old controllers and not have to shell out $100 for an extra pair.

I have very tiny hands for a man. I like my Dualshocks just fine thank you.

My first concern is backwards compatibility. They NEED that...my thinking is they may do something with the cloud service they purchased. Pop in your PS3 disc and you can play the cloud version. We'll see. As far as specs, I'm happy.

"Goal for PS4 is to achieve 1080p 60FPS games in 3D" This is honestly a solid goal. Home HDTVs can only go to 1080p and 4K TVs are too expensive and will not be in homes anytime soon on a massive scale. If the system is capable of handling 1080p 60FPS games in 3D, then dropping the 3D should ensure the games look and run great. What I would like Sony to do is REQUIRE games to run at 60 FPS...

I'm expecting the system to ship with between 4GB-6GB of RAM, I'm leaning closer to 4GB. The AMD A10 APU will be dated by the time the "Orbis" (OK name...meh, don't really care) is released. Obviously Sony will need to include an actual graphics card as the A10 just won't be able to perform "1080p 60FPS games in 3D" AND be able to have a smooth UI.

Otherwise, a 256GB HDD (SSD?) is good and they'll need to include an 8x-12x Blu-ray drive. The current 2x Blu-ray drive the PS3 has can do 8MBps...not very fast. However, an 8x Blu-ray drive can do 36MBps, and a 12x Blu-ray drive can do 54MBps. So a 12x Blu-ray drive would take roughly 19 seconds to load 1GB of data. Considering developers like to stream, I could see them loading levels within a few seconds and then having the rest of the level load in the background while we start playing. FULL 1080p @ 60FPS should look quite amazing

By comparison, a 12x DVD, at it's max read speed, can only do 16.5MBps, and that's if the disc is full.

Lastly, PS Eye 2.0, aka, Kinect 2.0. I like the Move, but having to hold the Move controller completely takes the fun out of things. Make that optional. I want/NEED to be able to just use my hands to swipe things. I love how Netflix can be controlled with a voice on the 360. Sony needs that, I don't care if people see it as copying, that's exactly what MS did to get the 360 in the position it is now.

EDIT: YES! A new controller is needed...but only a refinement. Nothing like the boomerang controller. Honestly, the controller Nintento just released for the Wii U looks ideal, something to fill out the hands while playing. No need to be radical here.

Why exactly would Sony drop the Cell processor when they themselves haven't even realized the full potential of the design?

Because "Hey guys wanna come over and play with my Wii" sounds so much better, haha.

1- Don't like the name Orbis (but it is what is... just look at the name "Wii").

2- Backwards compatibility. Sony struggled with it this generation and I don't see things getting better. I have a feeling they'll drop it completely (PS1 is too outdated to care about, PS2/PS3 BC would raise the costs of things too much). They'll probably keep the PSN service going on the PS4 so you can redownload anything you previously purchased and keep playing it through software emulation of some sort, but I really doubt they'll put any of the PS2/PS3 hardware in the new system. Just my thoughts...

3- SSD would be awesome.

The PS3 is my last serious video game console. I may get the PS4 in the future and just buy a few games but I'm not gonna get into the triple digit backlog like I have with my PS3. I'll be playing PS3 games til I die.

If Sony is really going to push PS+ in the future, I would think they would want it up and running on the PS4/Orbis launch.

And w/o a huge commitment from publishers (and/or Sony really putting up a bunch of cash), I can't see PS+ on PS4/Orbis having much if any instant game collection to attract new subscribers at launch w/o some sort of backwards compatibility.

I can hope at least.

Sony is probably not going to launch PS+ with the console just like the Vita or maybe PS+ will be something different for the PS4. The reason I say this is because the PS4 will already have a standard feature that can download updates in the background which is something PS+ currently offer.

I guess it makes sense to start thinking about a PS4 (or Orbis, whatever). I am surprised they are dropping Cell tech when it seems like something that could still be improved upon but I trust that if they are dropping Cell tech, they have something up their sleeve that is going to smash people's expectations of graphics.

In another question I ponder...how much longer until we just start wearing virtual reality helmets and play games wearing that?

It would be nice if Sony would let ps+ members pre order the ps4 from them directly and have free release date shipping.

Not surprised ditching Cell. This generation I've read nothing but developers complaining how its more difficult to create games on the PS3 because of the cell & how even though it has more processing power, hardly anybody wanted to use the extra time & resources to take advantage of it. So we basically didn't see any big difference when comparing 3rd party games on Ps3 vs 360. Hell, most games looked better on the 360 -_-

I want backwards compatibility back!!!!!!! My guess is they would offer this with their new cloud based service they purchased, but I'm gonna be pissed if we'll have to pay another fee to play the games we already own.

New controller? Nah. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I would say just offer little improvements & get rid of stupid six-axis.....its not needed. Oh & overall, stop trying to copy Nintendo everytime, lol.

I hope next gen wont be so dam long. They need to stop with these long life cycles because technology moves @ a rapid pace. Stuff gets outdated quickly.

Yea the ps2 dualshock was the best, screw trigger buttons. But I do like long console life cycles, makes the investiment feel better, rather than shelling out another $500 every five years instead. Ps3 still feels newish to me, and I had one since launch.

I said the same thing about the PS1, then the PS2... never went back to either of them.
