I'm sticking with the first original one. Money is tight, I cant imagine using over 500gb. Newer technology & I was reading the 7200 rpm makes a decent difference. Also bigger cache. No matter which way you look at it......it is better than my 160gb.

I've been thinking about it, and I think I'm still going with the WD 750. Reliability of Toshiba drives doesn't seem to be the greatest, and the two year warranty vs the one with Toshiba gives me a little piece of mine. I also don't think I'll need a TB for a PS3.

Well after spending a bunch of time over the weekend reviewing things, I went with the Toshiba 1 TB drive.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...w,3270-12.html It looks to be middle of the pack performance wise, when compared with both 5400 and 7200 RPM 9.5 mm and 7 mm hard drives. It looks like Scorpio Blue that was in the tests in a link earlier here was not same as the $65 Scorpio Blue on NewEgg. The 7 mm Scorpio Blue drive is apparently the one that beats a bunch of 7200 RPM drives, not the 9.5 mm drive that is on sale. As far as reliability, a there is a lot more to be found on the Scorpio Blue, both positive and negative, but I decided to take the risk on the Toshiba drive that hopefully doesn't come back to bite me in the ass. |

I would advise against 7200RPM drives. I think they may overheat in the PS3 enclosure.
I originally upgraded to a Western Digital 360GB 5400RPM drive - worked fine for years. Then I went to a 7200RPM 750GB Seagate drive - corrupted after 1 year and I LOST ALL MY DATA! Now I'm rocking a 5400RPM Western Digital 1TB drive and could not be happier. It is actually FASTER in my PS3 fat than the 7200RPM drive ever was. So I would steer clear and only use a WD Scorpio Blue 5400RPM drive in the PS3, which were my first and third drives above. |

SEAGATE. It doesn't have anything to do with the speed. The brand and specific model have a lot to do with it as well. Never go with a Seagate laptop drive, the only drive I would go with Seagate on would be their Barracuda Desktop drive, and even then there's a change you might get a dud. Their quality has dropped in the recent years. So yea, the whole "7200 RPM hard drive overheated my PS3" is rubbish, and untrue. If your hard drive was toasted, it was probably due to it being a bad drive anyways. If your PS3 YLOD, more than likely it would have YLOD on any type of hard drive. Otherwise, Scorpio Blue is a good recommendation, because it's a solid drive in any application, not just for a PS3. |

I feel like I am forever posting this in PS3 HDD threads: PS3 games are designed around 5400 RPM drives. Higher speed drives may or may not benefit you on a per-game basis but those higher speed drives will likely generate more heat.
I'm not advising people to not shoot for higher speed drives but I am saying that you shouldn't spend more money on them than their 5400 counterparts.

So yes, you may be right in some respects, your PS3 experience will probably not change one iota. PS3 is an uber slow and clunky system (they are still using FAT32 to format their drives...) But like all technology related purchases, one should do research to find out what is the best you can get for your money. Like I had reiterated, this drive was a pretty decent deal, has a bit of future proofing compared to other drives around the same price. Will you benefit from this if all you plan on doing is putting it in your PS3? Probably not. But then again, for $50 + free shipping, this is a good deal for a PS3 hard drive, and there really were not any negatives to purchasing this drive when it was on sale. |
