DVD's Ruin PS2?

I was at GameStop the other day, and I overheard the cashier telling someone that he's heard of several cases where someone had been playing DVD's in their PS2, and one day their PS2 "burned out." He then proceeded to say that the blue discs seemed to be the culprit. I'm wondering if maybe he's confusing DRE's with PS2's that simply won't work anymore, but now I'm worried about playing DVD's on my PS2. Has anyone else heard of this type of thing before?

That is where you went wrong. Listening to the cashier at a game store is the worst place to get info about video games. There's plenty of threads around here to support this as well. Its kinda like the other day at game crazy when the guy was trying to sell me steel batallion because "on ebay its going for over $400." Personally I take anything a video game store clerk says with a grain of salt.

I remember when one clerk told me that the PS2 scratches discs unless it is in the vertical position. Turns out it is just the opposite.

The trick is to find a video game store employed by gamers and not non-gaming high school students who get their entire gaming knowledge base from what their managers tell them. Tell a clerk at a game store that you just got a PS2, and are looking for good games. If they immediately steer you to the new releases and blank out when you suggest older titles, never listen to anyone from that store again.

ive been playing dvds since i got mine (june 01), been using it only vertical, and ive also been playing blue discs since then. ive never had any error, except for a problem with my controller. the dvds dont seem to effect mine, but it coul differ model to model

Also, DVDs do cause PS2 damage, but only one very old models. The reason is the original PS2 design wasn't meant for DVD function. It was added as almost an afterthought. However, because of this, the motor which spins the discs is designed to spin to load, stop, spin again, etc. With a DVD, there is constant DVD spin, which can wear out the motor on older machines. Newer models have the problem corrected.

I've never had a problem with any system I've had. My PS2 works in both postitions, and plays blue disks and dvds fine. Thought some dvd movies freeze halfway though playing but I dont use it to watch dvds anymore.

Does it really scratch them up in vert? I've got a V10 ps2, does it still have that problem? If so I'm going to have to pile that bitch on top of my Xbox or something in horizontal...

this is like asking if my stand alone dvd player will get ruined by playing dvds on it.

answer is no.

the ps2 is a dvd player,cd player,and ps1,ps2game player.
and no it doesnt scratch if u play vertically. again. this is what the system is made to do.

the only problems have been with old blockbuster games who put there stupid stickers on ps2 games that caused some to not spin properly.

my only resource to play dvds is my ps2, and in the past year and a half it's been fine. there's probably a dvd in it as much as a game, so it's been holding up well. i will say that i have also heard that dvds will ruin ps2s, and i also overheard it from a gamestop employee telling a gullible customer. i wasn't too concerned, though.

in addition, i would also like to second the request for tsheo to change your avatar. it's not funny. it's almost as offensive as manimal's.

I REALLY hate seeing the spread of misinformation like this, thats why I crank up the volume on my walkman any time I enter a EB or GS.

PS2s were designed to play whatever the hell you put in them(psone,ps2,cd or dvd) and it was designed to be played horizontally (left to right) OR vertically (top to bottom), it makes no differance!

The culprit in most cases in the laser alignment or in some a burned out motor which can happen to ANY equipement with constantly moving parts.

If you are getting DRE(Disk Read Errors) on any one medium: call sony, talk to a rep, tell him in detail whats going on, he'll take you through the diagnostic process, when nothing changes he'll give you an athorization number for a free repair, send it to sony, 20 bucks for shipping and it will be returned in under a month FIXED. (Unless you feel super confident in technical mingling and want to google up the laser realingment tutorials and do it yourself.)

Well IMO, they will not necessarly Ruin your PS2, but decrease its lifetime. There are several other factors involved, but it is a machine. Now whether it would actually really have an effect in the x amount of years you own it? Who knows?

BTW that nasty avitar.... I was looking at it... and was thinking.... will I ever think something like that is hot when Im old? Ill just get myself a nice 40-50 year old girl when im 70 ... But by then cosmetic surgery should be more advanced, making that woman look like DrunkTigerWoods avitar ....I guess ill have to wait 50 years.
