Resident Evil vs Eternal Darkness

I've been reading reviews on the RE remake for the GC and it's gotten great marks (90.5% on gamerankings), but then again so did Eternal Darkness. I'm one of the few people who has never played a Resident Evil game, but found ED to be pretty dissapointing. It had a great concept, but playing through the same 4 maps and the same few enemies over and over got real repetitive, especially with the spell casting that comes into play a lot near the end. Also the "puzzles" were just straigh-forward errands. and worst of all its breakthrough "sanity effects" didn't really effect the gameplay as they would just wear off in 10-30 seconds and place you back to where you were before the effect started and with no damage. It wasn't a bad game per se, but just a lot of wasted potential. i'd probly give it a 7/10. Did anyone else feel this way? If so was Resident Evil any better, or was it also highly overrated? I've heard from friends that the opening doors cutscenes ruin the flow of the game and that one of capcom's "ingenious" replay options is to have to go through the entire game without saving which sounds awful. But the reviews make it sound so cool. any thoughts?

i prefer Eternal Darkness because the movement on Resident Evil was terrible on the PS, and it was just as bad on GCN.

I too was disappointed by Eternal Darkness. I got it after reading all the hype and after a few hours thought "this is it?"

On the other hand, RE wore out it's welcome after RE3. I've not been tempted to play any other RE games since.

How can you have this discussion without Silent Hill considered too? I think that series is better than RE or ED by leaps and bounds.

I'm such a fan of ED that i have the official baseball cap. It's got much better controll, a much more involved and better story, and it's alot scarier (and in a cooler smarter way). Go with ED

I liked RE1 for the 'cube, personally. But be prepared for shitty, shitty controls.
Eternal Darkness I liked quite a bit, too, though. I felt the control was excellent. Especially considering that I had just come off from playing RE at the time. I see what you're saying about the somewhat repetative nature, but I still enjoyed the hell out of the game. Played through it twice, been meaning to play it again.
And I'm really excited about RE4. The information they released recently whet my appetite perfectly.

Was Silent Hill even released for the GameCube? First Silent Hill was damn scary, the second one was just a little too over the top with the insane story line.

I have played all Resident Evil games since ps1 so I would choose it over Eternal Darkness. Even though Eternal Darkness had some trippy things happen during the game.

I enjoy Eternal Darkness as I am a HUGE fan of HP Lovecraft. Modern "horror" has absolutely no ground upon which to stand when it comes to this man.

*Edit* POST 100!!!! YEAH, I am now a Cheapass Regular! *sniff* So proud..

I really enjoyed ED bc i need a s/h game to tide me over till re released and was surprised it turned out pretty badass

RE games are what got me back into gaming back in psx age so i enjoyed re:r and zero but imo they control horribly on the gcn controller

and no SH was released on GCN and probally never will be. im not sure who said that sh2 story was over the top? i thought it was alot more tamerin the sequals from the original bc they were able to tell the story better.

Resident Evil series was the main reason I bought the GC when it hit $99 along w/ ED, Skies of Arcadia, MGS, and their first party titles. Sadly I was disappointed in all of the titles that I played on the GC except RE and I haven't tried MGS yet though. I've always enjoyed the RE series and remake, zero, and nemesis (played a lil on PS2 but never got around to finish it, but recently beat it on GC on Sunday) are the GC versions I've played and they were all fun IMO. I felt the same way you feel on ED, cuz those are the same reasons I disliked and never finished it cuz I was getting bored of it. I would go with RE since it's cheap anyways and if you like there is a chance that you will like the others in it's series. RE: CV, RE 2 (have to have this high since it's the one that got me into it) RE remake, RE: 0, and RE 3 is the order of my personal favorites. I'm thinking that RE 4 will top RE: CV cuz it looks awesome.

I don't know what you're talking about. You can obviously save Resident Evil, otherwise it'd be impossible. As far as the door cutscenes, it's a RE trademark (although it's not going to be in RE4), and it doesn't disrupt the flow of the game at all, IMO. They're very brief.

I haven't played Eternal Darkness yet, but Resident Evil was one of my first GC games and I enjoyed it immensely. The only problem I have with the RE remake is the pacing near the beginning. It starts off pretty slow, but it gets damn good. The controls are not nearly as bad as they're made out to be, it's only a matter of minutes before you're used to them.

Any RE game is great, but the RE remake is probably my favorite.

True story: I actually started a bar fight over this very topic.

In any case due to the settlement my lawyer would probalby only suggest I say "Resident Evil all the way. "

And please don't drink too much.

I'm a huge survival horror afficionado (spelled right?), but I'm kindof confused about some of the comments about Eternal Darkness. First off, its not supposed to be a survival horror game! If anything, I'd label it as a dark, mature version of Zelda. The control was nearly flawless, the storyline was incredible, and I'd say its one of my all-time favorites. BUT, I also love true survival horror games and I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Resident Evil remake on cube. Even if you've played the original, there's tons of new surprises in the remake and it looks so damn pretty too. RE: Zero was fun too, and had an interesting (but weird as hell) story. RE:2 is probably still my favorite however, seeing how it got me interested in the whole genre. I still have yet to finishe Code Veronica and I haven't started Nemesis yet.

Regarding Silent Hill, I never played the original, but I thought Silent Hill 2 was utter crap. Basically you're running around a foggy town with a 2X4 hitting crippled people who can't stop vomiting. Not scary. And the story is stupid.

If you have a PS2, definitely check out the Fatal Frame series. The first one is incredible and the 2nd one is better in almost every regard. The Clock tower series is interesting too, but control is pretty funky. Also, I'm looking forward to SIREN.

Um, where was I going with this.....

Oh yeah. Get both Eternal Darkness and RE.
They're both under $20 for god's sakes!

I liked Eternal Darkness better. It was better in all areas IMO, story, CONTROLS, voice-acting, puzzles, spells and weapons. I think Eternal Darkness just took the whole survival horror thing to another level. Resident Evil is very simple in story, scares, and terrible in controls. But even after all that RE is still a pretty good game, just not up there with ED.

The spell system adds a whole nother dimension to the game. I enjoyed going through each characters history, and how the weapons and items fit the era and tied in with the story. Some areas are repetitive but I thought that added to each characters story tying into one another. The sanity effects and meter added another level of briliance to the game IMO.
