Wow $179, jeez thats alot.

Kinda sucks my order from Onsale.com is still back ordered but at seeing that price I can easily wait till mid-april for my sticks to come in the mail.

As far as getting a movie onto a 512mb card, you can get one on it but it will take a hit in image quality. But it is possible to get a whole movie onto a 512 card.

Way overpriced. I'll hold out for them to drop below $100 later this year.

I think the OP is suggesting that a 512 card is insufficient to store a full movie (2hrs plus) at a decent frame rate. I won't argue with that.

He's talking about the capacity required for a typical feature film at good quality. 512 MB is too little by at least 100 MB. But that doesn't prevent and material of lesser length of being stored on such a unit.

The best approach is to have a DVD burner so you can make discs storing large numbers of PSP formatted files that can be transferred to Memory Stick as desired. If you have a decent laptop you can view the files there as well.

Isn't the 2GB coming out really soon? I'm going to wait for this and a major price drop... oh yeah, and until I buy a PSP...

Yes, it sounds like you can, you just need to compress them properly:

4 and 8 GB units will become viable with the upcoming 8 Gb flash chips. The 8 GB units will be very expensive but no ore than the top of the line now and eventually will come down to accessable prices allowing a fair library to carried around.

can you get 2 -512 mb and divide larger movies up into two? the psp seems to fall short imo as a "multimedia" device, but i think it will be a nice gaming portable. the price is too high for me to consider personally.

how much are the umd movies going to cost? it just seems silly to own a dvd of spiderman, and then go buy another version of psp. has anyone successfully ripped a dvd and transferred it to the psp for viewing? if that's possible then that will move me to think of it as more of a multimedia device. the other problem for me is the price of memory...$179 for a gig?

how many memory devices do you expect the average psp owner to carry around?

Could you be more confusing please?

Seriously, you can easily fit say...4 or so family guy episodes on a 512 - just not a full-length movie at nice quality.

That's front page material on CAG if there ever was.

EDIT to point out that you can fit a *lot* of adult movies on one 4GB chip.

myke.
...April 1 is coming, you know.

Well, all I've got is a 256 MB stick. But I've been encoding Simpsons, Sealab 2021, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes for it. I've got close to 90 minutes worth of animation encoded, totalling 243 MB.

Not the highest possible video quality, of course, but pretty good. I guess it helps that the animation for Sealab and ATHF isn't all that great to begin with.
