One of the lesser known features of the PlayStation Portable is its ability to log on (via its WiFi Intranet online mode) to Sony servers and download updates to the operating system. Sony is said to have some big things planned for this feature (including some kind of net browser and a few PDA apps), and while it is starting small, the first major update for the Japanese PSP is now available online.

American PSP owners will not need to concern themselves with this latest update. Your PSP will already have all of these updates included in the firmware. If you wish to test and make sure, you can go to the toolbox on the far left of the PSP menu and check either "System Settings: System Information" or else go to "Network Update" and search for downloadable updates that way.

The full package for the first PSP update, which will take the PSP operating system to version 1.5, includes a lot of simple interface upgrades. These features include: Support for German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian language options on the PSP menu (it will not affect in-game menus), a setting to retain the screen mode on videos, and a quick-resume function to resume playback of audio and video after coming out of the PSP's sleep mode (it won't automatically keep playing the media file, but you can jump right into the track or movie exactly where you left off before sleeping.) Total file size for this is a whopping 14MB, and those cool extra features in development are nowhere to be found thus far.

More PSP updates will come along. This puts the North American and Japanese PSPs in synch (maybe the next upgrade will come when the European PSP launches?) Since this most recent update on for the North American launch is so slim, we're not expecting bigger updates for a while. But keep checking the Network Update node, you never know.

This is good news that Sony's updating PSP's so that any PSP bought in any territory will be able to update their OS to the same version.
