Need PSX RPG recommendations
I like 2D and/or strategy games. I'm not against 3D, just prefer 2D that's all. I have the following: Chrono Cross FF Origins FF Anthology FF Chronicles FF Tactics FF VII Hoshigami Koudelka Legend of Dragoon Persona Persona 2 Saiyuki Suikoden Tactics Ogre Thousand Arms I know about: Front Mission 3 Suikoden II Valkyrie Profile Star Ocean Tales of Destiny Legend of Mana Tales of Destiny In case you were wondering, I skipped a generation of consoles. I stopped playing games after the SNES and continued on with the PS2, so I missed PSX altogether and I'm trying to make up for it. Anyway, any recommendations will be appreciated and if you can, describe the battle system a little. Thanks in advance. |

Try SaGa Frontier. There's something about it; perhaps it's because it's so unique in the sense that you have seven characters from which to choose and each has their own storyline (some intertwine, some are longer than others). Also, the battle/experience system is unlike anything that I have played.
Attacks and magic are learned during and after battle. With Humans, simply attacking with your hands will develop physical attacks (attacks using body) such as Triangle Kick, Giant Spin, Pile Driver, etc. Using swords will gain Sword skills (Double Attack, Heaven Hell); using guns will develop gun attacks (Trick Shot) and hundreds more. Monsters absorb their enemies, which then retain their skills/attacks/stats. The harder the enemy, the better the stats. For Mystics, they have their own set of Mystic attacks (Mystic Sword, Mystic Magic), which can also absorb enemies. For Machines/Mechs, they take the data from other machine-type enemies, and gain new abilities and attacks. You can equip your machine with all kinds of weapons and items. You can even unleash combo attacks (5 characters per party) that simply devastate your enemies, and look spectacular. Speaking of parties, a major part of the game is forming the right parties for the right battles. Having a team of all humans is possible, but it's more fun with a couple of Machines and Monsters, too. The possibilities are endless. I apologize for the poor descriptions, and I don't do the game justice. I highly recommend this game, though, if you want a unique and fun (most important factor) RPG. With multiple storylines, multiple endings, and tons of sidequests, you can easily log hundreds of hours into this game alone. Must buy, if you ask me. Another game that I recommend is Legend of Legaia. Great game. You can check out the sequal on the PS2 (Legend of Legaia 2). |

How about Breath of Fire III and IV, or Grandia? I really enjoyed Wild Arms, and there's also Wild Arms 2. Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts 2 were decent strategy games, as well as the Arc the Lad pack. Xenogears and Vagrant Story were excellent, and were rereleased as greatest hits packages if you don't care about the green stripe. Alundra was a zelda style action rpg, but some of the puzzles were kind of hard, and there was also Alundra 2. Rhapsody was a quircky musical rpg from the same people that did Disgea. Legend of Legaia is also out there, but I never played it.

I definitely recommend giving Xenogears a try. My last, and most regretted, trade. A tear comes to my eye every time I think about it.

Try Xenogears for an interesting story and Grandia for a good battle system. Try Dragon Warrior 7 for mind-numbing boredom.

Nobody's mentioned is Torneko: The Last Hope or Chocobo's Dungeon 2. Both are kind of like the Rogue games on the PC. The same goes for the Quest mode in Ehrgeiz. Other games in the FFT/Tactics Ogre vein of strategy RPGs are Brigandine and Kartia, but I don't know much more about them. The Monster Rancher series has *some* RPG elements to it, but it's more like a breeding sim.
