I wonder if this technology will be far enough along for any of us to ever use. Could be a great thing for blind or deaf people.

I read this earlier on egm.com. Sounds like Batman Forever, though. This will not end well, I tell you...
EDIT: heh, The first time I looked at the page, that pic of The Riddler did not load. I guess this idea has already been brought up...

Of course, as with most patents, this thing will never take off. It sounds great in theory, but think of all the human rights activists (read: crazies) who will scream bloody murder at the idea of "Invading someone's brain! omgwtf!"
Not to mention Sony's EXCELLENT ability to market its own technologies, cough, BETA, cough, MINIDISC, cough, MEMORY STICK. Looks like it'll still be a controller in our hands for awhile :P |

Sony Uses Brainpower
www.gamespydaily.com
The electronics company has made a new innovation that could influence the future of interactive multimedia. By Eduardo Vasconcellos | April 7, 2005 Reuters is reporting that Sony has been given a patent for technology that beams sensory information directly into the brain. The innovation could be used to create more lifelike games, where your physical senses are applied. Some more practical uses would be to help people who are blind or deaf. The U.S. patent, given to Sony employee Thomas Dawson, explains a method for directing ultrasonic pulses to precise areas the brain to stimulate "sensory experiences" like scents, sounds and images. First reported on New Scientist magazine, Sony's advance could be an improvement over the current non-surgical process known as "transcranial magnetic stimulation," which stimulates the nerves using changing magnetic fields, but lack the ability to be focused on small sets of brain cells. A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told New Scientist magazine that no testing had been performed, but the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

Ultimatly all this will end up doing is make them money when somebody stumbles on the idea 10 years from now and puts it into a product without checking for the patent first allowing Sony to sue them for 90 million dollars thus making back the money they lost on the Duel Shock debacal.

Though fun to think about, this would be years upon years away.
That being said, i'm sure they are working on items for the blind and deaf. If they get the technology working for them, maybe one day it will become affordable enough to use in video games. Let's keep our fingers crossed. |
