Anyone seen this yet??

http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/nintendo-revolution.htm

Click "next page".. I dunno if this is rumors or news, but it sounds awesome.. if it's real..

* In a Nintendo first, the Revolution will sport an internal hard drive. The Revolution will have a two-sided, 8mm disk with a 5.4 GB capacity.
* The Revolution will be powered by twin processors. Just like Microsoft, Nintendo will use a custom IBM central processor. The one created for the Revolution is code-named "Broadway."
* The graphics card will be supplied by ATI and is code-named "Hollywood."
* Games will come on HD-DVD format discs rather than Sony's Blu-Ray format.
* Nintendo will finally get in the game with some online gaming support. Nintendo is set to create a service like Xbox Live. The early version of this service is what Nintendo is using to provide connectivity to the Nintendo DS.
* The Revolution will not support connectivity with the DS but will link up to Nintendo's next handheld game system.
* Preliminary development kits have already been released to some game studios. Apparently work has already begun on three of the launch titles -- new Mario, Zelda and Super Smash Bros. games.
* The Nintendo Revolution will use IEEE protocol to act as a wireless hub in the home. This will allow interaction with other Revolutions in the area.
* You will be able to hook the Revolution up to a television or computer monitor.

Smash Bros. Online....

I can't wait to own everyone!

I'm definitely picking up a Revolution on day one, even if this is all a rumor.

I'm glad to see that
a) they are going with the full DVD disc. Not that I care about some games having multiple discs, but I think other people will be more receptive. And it means that they might include some sort of DVD functionality. I sort of doubt it, but it couldn't be that hard.
b) that the three best franchises Nintendo has, Mario, Zelda, and Super Smash Bros. (Metroid a close 4th), are all going to be at launch. I mean those 3 games would make it the best launch in history. Most systems launch with one good title and a couple mediocre and crappy titles. But for 3 AAA titles to be ready at launch? That's unheard of. (Save for maybe the DreamCast with Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur)

Wow, that's pretty interesting... I hope the "Xbox Live type service" will be free..

All of that sounds very reasonable, which makes me think this news is credible or probably close to what the actual Revolution will be like. It sounds good so far. I hope the news of connectivity doesn't mean they will be abandoning the DS soon. What type of release date are we looking at for this thing, like late 2006 or so?

though their mock-up is kinda questionable. It looks like something from the not so near distant future.

One thing that has me questioning the article is the bit about it using HD-Dvd discs since Nintendo has always seemed to be in favor of proprietary formats. None the less, this is all very tasty.

I see one definitely drawback with having 3 major first party games at launch. This would kinda deter third party games to launch with them. Most people wouldn't buy more than 3 games at launch (unless there is a trade in deal ). I guess the third party games would have to be vastly different, like a sports game or something, for people to pick it up. It's kinda like, would you want to release an FPS at Halo 2's launch day.

Sony's Winter Demo disk proves otherwise.

Memory cards don't crash, but they do provide 1/100th of the storage capacity for almost the same price! Where can I sign up? I hate memory cards.

I can honestly say I dont feel impressed at all by these specs, but then again I didnt think I'd like the DS untill I saw it at E3.

However, my mind wil not be changed at all on this internet service BS. Live didn't impress me and this wont either unless it's free which I doubt seriously.

if you think about it, paying is good. You look at an xbox live service (4.50 a month) with barley any lag and then you look at ps2 online with say socom that lags horribley all the time. Lag sucks. i would pay a small fee

they pretty much do because they have the possibility of getting corrupted. i've had my gc memory card get corrupted multiple times.
Old 04-11-2005, 10:24 PM   #18
I'm reasonably sure touch screens on the controllers have officially been denied.
