So far, they have demonstrated that the technology can store up to 125G bytes on a 12-centimeter disk.

Nintendo didn't reveal exactly what kind of optical disk they are using, and doing a search on it turned up 9 or 10 sites with things like this. Oh well at least something will be revealed by the end of the year. Hoping this is close to what they're planning though. Any thoughts, or clarifications?

No, they specified DVD. What would be the point of a higher capacity format for them at this point? They aren't in the home video business and have no stake in delivery of HDTV content other than games.

...and even a disc with every single NES, SNES, and N64 game ever would take under 20GB.

N will be using dual sided DVD (most likely HD-DVD). but this is nice...

No, they specifically said DVD. HD-DVD is still only a proposed standard and doesn't offer Nintendo anything they need. They're only reluctantly offering DVD playback with an add-on for the license fee. They have no interest in doing HDTV content playback. How would that help them sell games? Just putting a second DVD in the box for titles that need it is far less costly than expecting every consumer to buy a console with a drive whose capacity beyond DVD will rarely be used.

And expect the discs to be single-side dual layer. 8.5 GB is a huge jump over the GameCube discs and people like their discs with artwork on top. I can't remember the last time I saw a DVD movie use both side but plenty of them include two single-sided discs. It doesn't cost much more and consumers find it aesthetically pleasing.

I thought they were just using dual-layered not dual sided.

In the end my point was just that they haven't said enough for us to know. And saying it will utilize a 12-centimeter disk is very vague. Just like most info they've released. By year end we will know, let's just wait. I just thought i'd illustrate that Nintendo might, might being the key word as what was said at e3 makes me nervous, have something up there sleave.

Dude, what part of the acronym-that-stands-for-nothing DVD don't you get. Nintendo didn't say 12 cm disc, they said DVD. This is a veryspecific standard. It isn't HD-DVD or any other newer technology. It's DVD the highly commodified standard that fills Nintendo's needs just fine in delivering multi-gigabyte products using drives and media of minimal cost.
