Did it sell well enough to become a GH? I always thought it had lackluster sales (at least relative to the hype it got). Plus it's only been out six months.

I'm sure you'll have to wait another 6-8 months for this one to hit GH, if even then. If you figure Burnout 3 just hit GH, Killzone has a LONG way to go.

I'll bet they're hoping to ride the hype wave generated by Killzone 2, thinking they might sell a few more copies of the original based on that.

Either way, it'll be a while.

Killzone was released Nov 2, 2004.

Sony is still pushing it in print ads, so they are definitely trying to milk it.
Old 06-01-2005, 12:23 PM   #6
It probably sells just well enough to to not have a price drop, but Sony probably still hasnt turned a profit on it yet.
Old 06-02-2005, 08:30 PM   #7
I thought it was a very enjoyable game, which I bought on launch day.

Sadly I had to sell it for PSP money

So I am really hoping it gets GH sometime soon so I can buy it again for less before I just give in and buy it for whatever cheapest I can find sometime soon.

I would also like for this to hit GH. I still haven't tried it. Despite the average reviews, I'd still like to try this game out--I'm just such an FPS whore.

I beta tested the online multiplayer, and it was a blast. Feels a lot like Medal of Honor, but with futuristic weapons.

The environmental settings are awsome. $2 says that if it had not received so much advanced hype that it would have scored a lot higher in reviews.

I remember there was certain requirments for a game to become a GH. It had to sell a certain amount of copies within a certain amount of time, then after another amount of time, the game would become a GH. Sorry I cant remember all the details, I remember reading about it in an old EGM about why certain games had yet to become GHs. Also, if anyone had a kept a tight hold on "thier pruse string" its Microsoft. How long did it take before Halo became a Platnuim Hit? I just become one recently and it was the first game released for the XBOX and it sold damn plenty.

Sony does have GH requirements, but some titles like to move fast to GH like Burnout 3.

MS has no Platinum Requirements -- they do it based on editorial decisions, usually earning potential. Silent Hill 2 is a perfect example of a game that sold very poorly for them, but they bumped it to a Platinum Hit because: it was the only horror game they had; being a PH game keeps it in circulation longer, along them to market it longer for the titles prestige; it sold well on the PS2 but the XBox version had extra content (at least until the PS2 GH came out) that made it very attractive; MS was trying to support Konami's efforts on the XBox.

As far as Halo goes, would you drop the price on your continuosly best selling title if people were still happy to pay $40 for it? Halo is a console defining game -- it has a huge rep, strong appeal, and people will buy the XBox just to play this title.

IIRC, for a PS2 game to become a GH, it has to meet these requirements:
- Sold over 400,000 copies
- Has been out for 8 months or over

I've been waiting for this to drop to GH... but I just gave in to temptation and got it at Gamerush $5 PO sale, along with Jak 3.

Some games seem to go GH real soon, but others take forever. I think that previous games in a well selling series need to go GH when a new entry in the series is announced.

Such as Sly Cooper 2, Jak 3, R&C: Up Your Arsenal, etc...

I'm hoping soon - they always announce the GH titles in batches. With Burnout 3 down to a GH, that means at least a couple of more titles should roll to GH as well.

As far as quantity sold, I am sure that if Killzone had been selling terribly, we would see distributors trying to unload it -- it is probably doing pretty fairly as a Halo alternative on the PS2.

Well... a good amount of titles went GH with Burnout 3.

Star Ocean 3, Spider-Man 2, and X-Men Legends all went GH. I think Best Buy even shows GH packaging for SM 2 and X-Men Legends in the ad this week.

So that's about it for this batch - I have a feeling next batch will be Killzone, Jak 3, Sly Cooper 2, and Up Your Arsenal.

As my toddler used to say "Fadoody!"

Hell of a batch for the next one though -- yikes!
Old 06-12-2005, 11:17 PM   #17
Actually I hope it doesn't become greatest hits. As we all know, these games will all drop to the $20 or less price point sooner or later and I'd rather have a copy without the ugly red GH label.
Old 08-04-2005, 09:44 AM   #18
BTW -- I got an email from Sony (like most of u probably) announcing GH status August 23, along with a bunch of other games too:
ATV Offroad Fury 3
Jak 3
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Hot Shots Golf Fore
Sly 2
Syphon Filter Omega Strain
Killzone

See ya online.

I borrowed killzone from the library (for free : ) ) and found the single player to be really repetative. You basically just kill the same people over and over and over again. The environments were pretty nicely done though. As for mulitplayer, i sadly didnt get a chance to try it out.

That is the state of FPS games today like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, or Blackhawk Down. They are striving for realism, unlike the Dooms, Marathons, Quakes, and Hexxens that definined the early generation. Killzone's hook is supposed to be in-game cinematic-like occurances that happen throughout the game. Unfortunately, if u are not paying attention, u can miss them.
