Dynasty Warriors series
I was thinking that I should get the 4th one since itsa lot cheaper, but if the fifth in the series is a lot more improved in terms of graphics and gameplay, then I'll get the fifth one instead. |

Don't touch Dynasty Warriors 3. Get 4 instead. I haven't tried 5 myself, sorry.
However, I personally didn't like the Dynasty Warriors series all that much... compared to the the Samurai Warriors series. I think the latter is FAR superior both in gameplay, and overall mood. Dynasty Warriors is lighter hearted in mood whereas Samurai Warriors takes itself far more seriously with a much better soundtrack, and voice acting. They're fundamentally very similar... but I think Samurai Warriors is the better of the two. However, Dynasty Warriors: Empires is a little exception. It's a slight spinoff of Dynasty Warriors, it's half Dynasty Warrios and half Wargame. You have a wargame system, but the battles themselves are played out in the usual Dynasty Warriors way. My buddy who loves the series is enthralled with it. But me? I say go get Samurai Warriors =) If not, get 4 or newer versions of Dynasty Warriors. 3 is too sparse and lacking in cool stuff. Oh yes, all of this IMHO =) Have fun, they're all good games if you like brawlers. |

Well I'm gonna give some opposite opinions here.
DW5 is the best one so far, they fixed all my issues w/ 4 - 4 is the weakest of the series, w/ the exception of 2. Part 3 is MUCH better than 4 - they dropped the ball w/ 4, and by the changes made in 5 it looks like they realized that. Samurai Warriors is decent but doesn't hold a candle to the DW games - not nearly enough characters, and those castle levels suck. Let's not even mention the screwed up way they handled musou attacks when playing co-op. So to recap, I'd rank them - 5, 3, 4, 2. Realize that the XL packs for 3 & 4 are basically add-ons, so don't get those in place of the other games. Five is by far the best, but if you're looking to go cheap & just want to try out the series, 3 is a great place to start. I will say, if you don't have a friend to play with you probably won't get what all the fuss is about. They're ok single-player, but co-op is where it's at for these games. |

What are some of the differences, give some reasons!
I've only played part 3 and 4. 3 seems to be harder than part 4, the graphics when they do the cutscenes are horrible in 3, everybody looks like they're molded from shiny clay. The in game cutscenes are also dated and the character models have blocks for hands. What I liked about 3 was that you had to look for weapons on the battlefields whereas in 4 it upgraded automatically when you got enough experience. It may seem trivial but this little change made a lot of difference in terms of replay value. |

I'd say get 5, but that's just cause I love the characters they added in it. Though 4 added my all time favorite character (Zhou Tai), 5 adds a lot of characters who are insanely fun. The first that comes to mind is Ling Tong. How can you not love a guy with nunchucks in an ancient Chinese game? It makes no sense, but that's why I love him. Also, Guan Ping was a great addition. And Zuo Ci is fun to be, if not overpowered. I'd say at the least get 4, just so Zhou Tai exists in the game, but I whole-heartedly recommend 5. It has everything the previous games had, plus more.

3 doesn't have as many characters as 4 or 5, but I prefer it over the other 2. The gameplay is more challenging and I think it has better replay value than the other 2. You should be able to get DW 3-4 on eBay or in stores pretty cheap. No point in paying full price for five, when they are all basically the same game with a different storyline.

I dont think you can go wrong with picking up 4 quite cheaply. If you like it as much as most dynasty warrior fans do then you will get sucked in to buying 5 anyway. haha. Its a really great series.

2 and 3 were the best ones, just because their level design almost always put you interesting situations where you were constantly outnumbered/over powered and had to constantly help out your allies to survive.
But really, any version is worth a purchase to start the series on except the two xtreme legends games.

2 was awsome when it came out but I can't bring myself to play it anymore. I think overall 5 is the best but if you don't feel like spending too much money, 3 or 4 would be good too. I can't remember which one I liked more though.

Are you taling about the beat em up game, or the strategy games? I personally liked the strategy one better. It conform much closer to the SAMKOK (Romance of three kingdoms) story. (I dunno if the story really existed as a part of Ancient Chinese history or it's merely a fiction).
