OK, so I go buy something at McDonalds this morning and my debit card gets denied (Visa). I find this odd since I've had it for voer a year and never had it happen. I then feel curious so I go check my online balance as soon as I get home, and guess what? Someone apparently got my debit card info and blew almost $3,000 in the last 2 days. I then call the bank and cancel my card, then go to the bank itself to get this resolved. Well, they cut up the card, submit the problem, and give me a case number. Since only half of the money had gone through completely I was only able to submit that for review, and have to wait for next week to submit the other half for review. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? If you did, did you get your money back? I'm pissed as hell and want to know if I'm screwed or not (those Visa check card commercials say I'm gonna be fine, but i want to hear from someone this has happend to). Thanks.

Sorry, can't help you there.

But this is why I use credit cards. You're only responsible for $50 in fraudelent charges, and some cards give you money back as well.

Just be sure you can pay the balance off each month.

E-Z-B - If it's your CC number that is stolen (and not the card) you aren't responsible for a dime, actually. And you're right AFAIK that there aren't really binding laws protecting you for debit card fraud like there are for CC fraud.

The problem with debit is that the money is actually gone from your account. I think most banks will float you the amount as a loan (maybe interest free?) while the case is in process, but it's definitely a lot bigger PITA than if your CC info gets stolen. In addition having a debit thief clean you out can cause checks you write for other things (CCs, rent, car payment, etc etc) then bounce and you'll get hit with fees and other problems from those other folks and/or overdraft charges from your bank. Headaches.

That's why I don't use Visa Check Cards. Bank issued me one of those instead of an ATM automatically on a 2nd account I opened a few months ago, which kind of cheesed me off.

When stuff like this happens I always find the person and bring my two friends with me.

If someone stole that much money from me, I wouldn't even need number 1.:)

You should be fine, but it can take up to 10 days, so if you need money before then, it could be tricky. In about a month, I would also get your credit reports, just in case they stole more than the card number from you.

The porn guy?

I can't imagine how he would withdraw without the actual card at an ATM, he probably made some online purchases. Thats if I understood you correctly and you never lost the card. In this case they will probably catch him pretty easily, and won't he be pissed when the FBI shows up when all those Xbox 360s get dropped off at the bums house.

About three years ago I opened my Visa checkcard bank statement to find a string of charges all from the same "internet business" in Florida, each charge incrementing in amount over the last, for a total of about two grand. My bank (Bank of America) handed me a form to fill out so my charge dispute was in writing, and temporarily credited the money back into my account (pending investigation) within a day. Within another two weeks they sent me a letter informing me that the "business" that performed the charges was under investigation by the Feds for, surprise, credit/debit fraud, that my money was wholly refunded and the matter, as far as I was concerned, was closed.

So basically, you'll be fine. The hassle will be minimal, mostly just waiting for your replacement card to arrive in the mail.

Now the real question is... why are you buying shit at McDonalds with a debit card? Carry some folding money for the minor expenses.

Hey... if he didn't swipe his card then... he might not have found out until much later...

How did they spend the money? You still have the card so they had to just take the number and then either guess the 3 digit code on the back or actually have access to your card to get that number.

I assume they are not gonna ship whatever they bought to your house so you can track it that way. OR they might have dumped the money into a Neteller account to launder into online gambling sites with fake contact info but they still require a phone number/ social security number check if you try to do a credit card deposit rather than a normal bank transfer to them.

You should be ok just a hassle for the time being. This is why you should have a seperate savings account with no cards tied to it! I have my debit checking account and a savings account at one bank and another checking at another bank. You just keep like $400-500 in your debit account and then transfer money into it online as needed. If I ever need more i've got the debit checking account at the other bank as a back up. Don't keep all your eggs in the same basket when the lock is faulty.
