Though I love them to death, claiming their controller will be as revolutionary as they say seems iffy to me, but I have faith that it won't SUCK. After all,

They made the original NES controller, a mold still semi-followed today.

They invented shoulder buttons with the SNES controller.

They created the current trend of analog sticks on the controller with the N64.

Though the Gamecube controller wasn't revolutionary, it WASthe Gamecube controller that eventually became the first controller in history to be a wireless first-party produced controller.

Looking at all this, I feel a bit more comfortable with their controller talk. I don't think it'll live up to the lofty goals they presented themselves with, but I'm sure it'll do SOMETHING cool no one has thought of before.

Whaddya ya'll think?

I don't have faith, but I hope that it will be good.

Yeah I believe in Nintendo. I think they put out the best games this generation... and they probably will again.

As weird as the controllers get, they usually end up being the best feeling ones around. I can't say if they'll be revolutionary, but who knows? Just thinking that they'll need a type of controller to support every other nintendo console game from past systems, I'm sure it won't be anything far from unique.

Faith that the new controller will be sweet? yes

Faith that said controller will ever be used well by a third party? minimal.

Faith that they'll win marketshare? no.

Faith that they'll make fun games? absolutely.

Will I buy Rev? absolutely.

I'm a bit worried that the controller won't be a great as everybody is expecting it to.. I don't get how they plan to make a controller that:
-can be used to play old NES, SNES, N64 and GC games
-less complex
-has to be revolutionary

Of course, my first point could be unnecessary because the Rev does have ports for GC controllers but Iwata said the controller can't be too different as it'll be used to play classic games.

But I have faith in Nintendo. When the DS launched and there were abundance of crappy titles, my faith was at an all time low. But then I saw developers putting the DS to better use with time and slowly I saw what they were doing.

Nintendo wasn't crazy, they're just the only company who has enough balls to try something besides playing follow the leader. And when they say that the day they stop making a system is the day they go out of business complete, you know they're going to try their best.

I do, and I know the reason, it's called Zelda games. The controller can be a circular peice of cardboard with seven button duct taped to it and I'd still play it for zelda.

I do have faith in Nintendo, but it's minimal. I have faith that their first-party titles on the Revolution will likely be successes. I don't have much faith that they'll be able to gain back all of the third-party support that they've lost.

I will buy a Revolution either way. I'm just going into it with lowered expectations so that I can either be pleasantly surprised when they deliver above and beyond what I expected...or less upset if Revolution turns out to be less revolutionary than they suggest.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure someone will, but didn't the 3D-Pad with the analog stick for Saturn come out before the N64 launched?

Taken from: http://www.axess.com/twilight/consol.../saturn_b.html

Out with the old, and in with the new! Sega almost totally redesigns the Saturn controller in response to the Nintendo 64's revolutionary analog controller.

The new addition of notice is an analog thumb stick, but hidden from view is one of Sega's own innovations - The clicky old shoulder buttons have been replaced with analog triggers. Also, they seem to have discarded the previous directional pad and replaced it with exactly the same one featured on Sega's 6 button Genesis controller.

I'm not sure how factual this information is. Maybe someone else could do some more thorough research, as I'm a lazy bum and just don't want to.

Yeah, I was under the impression the N64 did it first, but my memory of all that is hazey at best.
Old 08-02-2005, 02:48 AM   #17
Yes, Nintendo had the idea first but Sega beat them to the market with the quickly designed controller (hence why it wasn't very good). Most people wrongly credit to it being Sega's idea... it wasn't, they were just good theives.

Either way, it (analog control) was Nintendo's revolutionary aspect for the N64. See, this is why they're so afraid of people stealing ideas now..

I dunno man, I thought the 3D-Pad was pretty amazing...the stick was smooth as butter and it had analog triggers as well. Anyway, sorry for the tangent.

Hey, to each his own I guess..

I was talking about the build quality, they didn't feel as sturdy to me. But I do agree on two things: the stick was damn nice and the triggers one upped Nintendo's Z trigger, though I don't think they were fully pressure sensitive (they only had 2/3 stages I think). Not sure though as I never got to test them out on many games.. or any games except for Nights.

I think knowing shit like that is a pretty good indication that your a nintendo fan freak and any argument or discussion would be entirely pointless. That said Nintendo ed up the last 2 times, I have little hope this time will be any different.
